..destroyed, dismantled, razed, felled, pulverised, decimated, obliterated. Durham has probably used most, if not all of those in his past Spirerites v U's reviews. All are associated with Durham's fascination with the twisted spire of St Mary and All Saints Church in Chesterfield. One season, when visiting me for the match he insisted we actually visited the church prior to the game as it was within walking distance to Spirites old ground of Saltergate, a very close replica of Layer Road; old, decrepit, puddles in the gents loo, etc...but always had a great atmosphere. My interest in the Spirites started in 1997 when I lived for several years in Chesterfield and actually watched them winning the FA Cup quarter final v Notts Forest at Saltergate, then Chessie v Middlesborough at Old Trafford 3-3 in the FA cup semi-final after extra time and then the replay at Hillsbrough when they lost 0-3. A great run for a team in the, then Div.3 Hence my long term interest with Spirerites results ever since. In 2001 Spirerites were promoted to Div.2 from Div.3 and the opening match of season, at which great celebrations were to be had, was against, guess who...the U's. I was actually invited by my next door neighbour to join him in the Directors box for the game. Result, 6-3 to the U's. Great score but not sure if I had let it be known previously that I was lifelong U's supporter before the match I think it became obvious during the match however. Never invited again...strange that! Popular score through the years though. So what about Tuesday then. Spirerites, like us, have departed their "homely" stadium, and consequently have lost the great atmosphere of the past and have moved to SMH modern new stadium with normal crowds of 8-10k. They will have great support, as no doubt we will have also. My ideal team would be..(best ever U's lineup) Percy Ames Fisher, Fowler, Marshall, Miller, Rumney, R.Hunt, Wright, McCleod, B.Hunt, King.
Who the hell are they I hear most of the boarders asking? I know very little about the current squad but ask me anything about the 60's players as above. For Tuesday and the current squad, who is available, injured, uninjured? Therefore can only guesss at the following line-up How about Macey Tucker Bishop Arujeo Hunt Read Payne Williams Goodwin Lisbie Tovide Subs. Anyone not injured but including Hunt, Terry and definitely Anderson Where is Mbick? Does anyone know because we are sure missing his influence, pace and goalscoring ability up front.
Chessie v U's matches have featured lots of goals historically and obviously our big home win will probably still be in their minds. So don't be surprised if they come at us early to make a point. However, our recent away form; thinking of Grimsby, Walsall and Notts County all of which I attended would be nice. However given our result and that of Chessie on Saturday I am going for a 0-0 draw which also let's me out of forecasting a goalscorer. Great journey and a great game for all travelling. If I am able to make it to the match, this season is my daughter's treat to me, so I will be sat with her in the "home" end. If you happen to see somebody being escorted out from the home end during the match then it just maybe........me! Well, that's it and my great respects paid to my bestest mate Durham Exile. Not anywhere near up to the brilliance of a Durham review but best I could do guys.

You did him proud gerry. Nicely done and some lovely insight and anecdotes too.
Agreed, lovely preview Gerry, and Durham would have really enjoyed that!
My 6-3 anecdote - I was on honeymoon, otherwise I probably would have been there, so I signed up for the first time to text alerts, one per goal and two more for half-time and full-time scores. Cost me quite a bit...

Tickled me that. Imagine sitting there hoping for no more goals as every one is costing you more money! Also we can't have been involved in too many nine goals plus games although honeymoons are meant to involve a fair bit of scoring no?
Presume we will have a reserve keeper available tonight and watch out for the young lad from Leicester who chipped Macey from his own half at the JCS for Newport earlier in the season, who has been reload out.

Not sure it's been confirmed that we will. Something about not taking him out of school so close to his GCSE's.

LOL
Twelve 9-goal matches overall, ranging from a 2-7 defeat at Prenton Park to two 8-1 victories back in 1938 at Layer Road against Dartford and Yeovil & Petters United.
Ten goals in a game is our record, on five occasions. Two 9-1 victories against Bradford City and the Brakes, one 8-2 at home against Stockport County in 1958, one 7-3 against Norwich Reserves back in 1937 (only our fifth game in existence) and the forgettable 3-7 defeat at Feethams under Big Roy in 1993.
Some welcome news on the injury front at last. Samson and KVY both fit to start, Anderson also starting, and to quote our social media team, Mbick is Mback on the bench.
We all know Durham would have been incandescent about that, and rightly so, though that in a way also makes me chuckle to remember his passion. Sadly, not a passion reflected by the players on the pitch, in part undone by yet more woeful refereeing, but we can't deny Chesterfield were the better side.
Spoke to a Chesterfield supporter after the game who didn't believe that it was a penalty but felt we just didn't want the game and they did. Team only had a buffet at our hotel and not staying overnight. Have complained they obviously fed them too well. Felt Tovide did his bit as instructed but nobody else went with him in closing down.

Whether we agree with the score, the result was sadly correct. Heyho, I'll be there on Saturday for the Newport game regardless. Thankfully we don't have to be the traditional run-buster this time, after the Exiles beat Tranmere tonight.
What has struck me is the team apparently travelled up this morning. How is that satisfactory preparation? From Colchester it is a weary journey to anywhere north of Birmingham and surely the players need more time to prepare and get their heads right etc. It is perhaps no coincidence that our worst performances have been at Barrow and Chesterfield.
I fear that fans will soon turn on the Cowley’s given the wheels appear to have inexplicably fallen off. How have we suddenly gone from the League Two Form Team to one humbled in mid-table.

Back to the dark days of a few seasons ago. Not even second best has a contest and even twelve minutes extra time became a chore . Never got any foothold on the ball and control, possession given away aimlessly too regularly. Considering only a week ago we got a credible point at the Shabby to this performance shows how inconsistent the away performances have become .
The team were booked in to stay at the hotel for the game which was called off ! However even when we played Man Utd and had earned a cup bonus we travelled up on the day.

Just realised that this was Cowley's 100th league game in charge and probably up there as being one of the most disappointing. Now ahead of Joe Dunne and level with John Ward for league matches in charge.

COLCHESTER United are keen to sign goalkeeper Melvin Minter as back-up for Matt Macey.
Should look to sign Bonis for next season, looked better than a bench warmer .
