This comp is open to anyone and everyone. One of the things on "The U'sual" we do as we move from season to season.
Some great match-ups. One of the best UEFA comps in recent memory. We're giving a season 1 test run
edit: Keeping it simple in the round of 16: What teams will advance to the quarterfinals? -- 1 point for each correct.
First legs. Return legs are on 17 March.
Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) v Anderlecht (Belgium) (18:00) Basel (Switzerland) v Sevilla (Spain) (18:00) Villarreal (Spain) v Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) Athletic Bilbao (Spain) v Valencia (Spain) LIVERPOOL v MANCHESTER UNITED Sparta Praha (Czechs) v Lazio (Italy) Borussia Dortmund (Germany) v TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (18:00) Fenerbahçe (Turkey) v Sporting Braga (Portugal) (18:00)
An excellent Round of 16.
As they stand in their leagues:
Spain -- La Liga 4. Villarreal 15-8-5 (53 pts) 5. Sevilla 12-9-7 (45) 6. Atl. Bilbao 13-5-10 (44) 11. Valencia 8-10-10 (34)

The Happy UEFA PL Final 16, DL 10 March 19:00. Open to all. Note deadline. on 18:33 - Feb 28 by burnsieespana
It is actually a Cup we could do with winning to help maintain our 4 places in the Champions League.
Spot-on. It's such a fabulous 16 this year. In past years I was like, what part of the Balkans is that team from? Is that other club from Denmark or Norway? Is that a city in Switzerland or Lichtenstein?
I feel the Europa League hit a jackpot this year.
Haven't watched so much Thursday football in eons.
I think we'll just have a straight table. The top 2 will be in a final one-off while maintaining the overall table as its own separate entity.
First legs. (Return legs are on 17 March) -- Pick who you believe will be in the final 8... 1 point for each correct -- NO SCORES. Simply pick who will be in the quarterfinals...
Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) v Anderlecht (Belgium) (18:00) -- SHAKHTAR DONETSK Basel (Switzerland) v Sevilla (Spain) (18:00) -- BASEL Villarreal (Spain) v Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) -- VILLARREAL Athletic Bilbao (Spain) v Valencia (Spain) -- ATHLETIC BILBAO LIVERPOOL v MANCHESTER UNITED -- MANCHESTER UNITED Sparta Prague (Czechs) v Lazio (Italy) -- SPARTA PRAGUE Borussia Dortmund (Germany) v TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (18:00) -- TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR Fenerbahçe (Turkey) v Sporting Braga (Portugal) (18:00) -- FENERBAHÇE
As they stand in their leagues:
Spain -- La Liga 4. Villarreal 15-8-5 (53 pts) 5. Sevilla 12-9-7 (45) 6. Atl. Bilbao 13-5-10 (44) 11. Valencia 8-10-10 (34)
Premier League 2. Tottenham 15-10-4 (55) 6. Manchester Utd 13-8-8 (47) 7. Liverpool 12-8-8 (44)
Thanks, everyone. What a nice level of participation for the inaugural Europa League PL.
If anyone wants to still join for the 20:05 kickoffs, meaning the first deadline of 18:00 was missed, that's 4 first legs. 1 point for each correct to progress.
The first table will be sorted after 17 March -- 1 point for the round of 16. The quarterfinals will then be scored 2 points each.
...
Had a brain freeze. Neglected to note that 2. Sparta Prague is 14-2-3 (44 points) .. second in the Czech Liga.
Born in Czechoslovakia in Ostrava, some may be amused to know that 16. Banik Ostrava is a massive 2-1-17 (7 pts) at the foot of the table with an eye-watering 13 points below the drop zone with a league most terrible -26 GD.
So far, (1 pt each, Group of 16) .. after 1st leg: -- 1 point for who proceeds to the quarters.
Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) v Anderlecht (Belgium) (18:00) -- Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 Basel (Switzerland) v Sevilla (Spain) (18:00) -- Basel v Sevilla 0-0 Villarreal (Spain) v Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) Athletic Bilbao (Spain) v Valencia (Spain) LIVERPOOL v MANCHESTER UNITED Sparta Prague (Czechs) v Lazio (Italy) Borussia Dortmund (Germany) v TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (18:00) -- Dortmund 3-0 Fenerbahçe (Turkey) v Sporting Braga (Portugal) (18:00) -- Fenerbahçe 1-0
Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) v Anderlecht (Belgium) -- Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 Basel (Switzerland) v Sevilla (Spain) -- Basel v Sevilla 0-0 Villarreal (Spain) v Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) --Villarreal 2-0 Athletic Bilbao (Spain) v Valencia (Spain) -- Athletic Bilbao 1-0 LIVERPOOL v MANCHESTER UNITED -- LIVERPOOL 2-0 Sparta Prague (Czechs) v Lazio (Italy) -- Sparta Prague v Lazio 1-1 Borussia Dortmund (Germany) v TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (18:00) -- Dortmund 3-0 Fenerbahçe (Turkey) v Sporting Braga (Portugal) (18:00) -- Fenerbahçe 1-0
...
*Looks like Spurs are done and dusted. *Shakhtar Donetsk, first in Ukraine, I picked them. An absolutely solid squad that may be in the CL regardless of how they fare in the Europa League to qualify automatically. *Liverpool, while I did predict Man Utd to advance, I'm much happier today with Liverpool's strong 2-nil entering the second leg. *My Sparta Prague, best that can be expected with a 1-1 v Lazio. *Fenerbahçe did not impress me much.
...
Quarterfinals, each game will count for 2 points. This round of 16 only 1 point each.
...
More updates on this thread as warranted. The final 8 will be a new thread.
Anderlecht (Belgium) v Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) (agg. 1-3) (20:05) Sevilla (Spain) v Basel (Switzerland) (agg.0-0) (20:05) Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) v Villarreal (Spain) (agg. 0-2) (18:00) Valencia (Spain) v Athletic Bilbao (Spain)(agg. 0-1) (18:00) MANCHESTER UNITED v LIVERPOOL (agg.0-2) (20:05) Lazio (Italy) v Sparta Prague (Czechs) (agg. 1-1) (18:00) TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR v Borussia Dortmund (Germany) (agg. 0-3) (20:05) Sporting Braga (Portugal) v Fenerbahçe (Turkey) (agg. 0-1) (20:05)
If you predicted Shakhtar, Villarreal, Liverpool and Dortmund to proceed, that appears to be 4 points right there in the Round of 16. Four other ties look precarious. Only 1 point for each correct,.. but...
Quarterfinals will up the ante, each of four worth 2 points each. Once we are in the semis, it will return to 3 points for a spot-on, like MFB's and Wessex's and Happy's scoring system. 1 point for an outcome. But first things first.
Top 2 will be in the Uefa League Final. No tie-breaker. If 2 and 3 are level on points, MFB's following week will be the tie-breaker. No first-to-post. It will play out until there is a winner, semis and etc.
Here is what we get across the pond:
(18:00) B. Leverkusen v Villarreal (18:00) Fox Sports 1 ("Fox" is Sky, as I understand it) Valencia v Atl. Bilbao (18:00) Fox Sports 2
(20:05) Manchester Utd v Liverpool (20:05) Fox 1 Tottenham v Dortmund (20:05) Fox 2
*all in HD.. Every game b-cast from England is now in HD, the BPL, Championship, League Cup, FA Cup, Euro League, and the Champions League, the playoffs from the Championship to the Conference.
OK, for our LIVERPOOL supporters, keeping in theme with Mitchell and Webb, Liverpool fan to a not-so-much Spurs fan, "We're going to trolly you in the league"
"You suddenly remembered you're a massive Liverpool fan 20 seconds after they'd won the European Cup." ... Brilliant.
If you predicted these first three--one point each to be in the quarterfinals-- then that is 1 point for each. 2 points for picking who will advance in the quarters, next round. Meanwhile:
2nd legs, 17 March.
Anderlecht (Belgium) v Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) (agg. 1-3) (20:05) Sevilla (Spain) v Basel (Switzerland) (agg.0-0) (20:05) Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) 0-0 v VILLARREAL (Spain) (agg. 0-2) -- VILLARREAL Valencia (Spain) 2 v 1 ATHLETIC BILBAO (Spain) (agg. 2-2) -- ATL. BILBAO Manchester United v Liverpool (agg.0-2) (20:05) Lazio (Italy) 0-3 v SPARTA PRAGUE (Czechs) (agg. 1-4) -- SPARTA PRAGUE Tottenham Hotspur v Borussia Dortmund (Germany) (agg. 0-3) (20:05) Sporting Braga (Portugal) v Fenerbahçe (Turkey) (agg. 0-1) (20:05)
Anderlecht (Belgium) 0 v 1 SHAKHTAR DONETSK (Ukraine) (agg. 1-4) -- SHAKHTAR DONETSK SEVILLA (Spain) 3 v 0 Basel (Switzerland) (agg. 3-0) -- SEVILLA Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) 0-0 v VILLARREAL (Spain) (agg. 0-2) -- VILLARREAL Valencia (Spain) 2 v 1 ATHLETIC BILBAO (Spain) (agg. 2-2) -- ATHLETIC BILBAO Manchester United 1 v 1 LIVERPOOL (agg. 1-3) -- LIVERPOOL Lazio (Italy) 0-3 v SPARTA PRAGUE (Czechs) (agg. 1-4) -- SPARTA PRAGUE Tottenham Hotspur 1 v 2 BORUSSIA DORTMUND (Germany) (agg. 1-5) -- BORUSSIA DORTMUND SPORTING BRAGA (Portugal) 4 v 1 Fenerbahçe (Turkey) (agg. 4-2) -- SPORTING BRAGA
Final 8 will be 3 from La Liga and 5 others.
First table: (sorted by first to post. Next round's ties are now worth 2 points each. Pick the winner, again, no scores) ... the semifinals, Round 3, will determine the finalists. 1 v 2 ... or 1 v 2, 3 or 4. NO TIE-BREAKERS.
If 2 and 3 have the same number of points, then MFB's PL is the replay. If 1 and 2 have the same number of points, then 1and 2 are in the Final.
As I'm going to be in charge of the Happy Honours List 2016/17, Wessex Champions League is worth 5 points for the winner in the World Rankings, as has been. And I think 2 points is fair for the Happy UEFA League winner. 1 point for the runner up.
*Durham deserves massive kudos for getting not one correct yet... Pete? That's really hard to do
** Full update on a new thread once we know the draws. I want to wait to post the Happy Europa PL week 2 till (after) I can also give context, meaning where the final 8 stand in their leagues. Honestly? I was going with my heart picking Sparta Prague. I didn't realize they were that good to dismantle Lazio like that.
Each pick who will progress from 8 to 4, 2 points each. No tie-breaker yet. No need to inbox me or whatever.
Like with Wessex Champions League, no tie-breaker. But I do need some formula to at least create a table at this point.
The Happy UEFA PL Final 16--Deadline 10 March 18:00. Open to all. Note deadline. on 10:32 - Mar 21 by burnsieespana
Anybody know when the draw takes place?
It happened on Friday, Burnsie.
First legs (7 April) -- (each at 20:05)
Athletic Bilbao v Sevilla Borussia Dortmund v Liverpool Sporting Braga v Shakhtar Donetsk Villarreal v Sparta Prague
I wanted to wait till after the weekend in order to update the league positions of the 8 teams involved before the international break.
The quarterfinals thread will be posted later today. No tie-breaker yet. First-to-post matters only in terms of sorting the table before the semifinals in April.
