Players in, out or signed new contracts for 2016/17 and beyond. 15:56 - May 6 with 11340 viewsLeadbelly

Players in - ?

Players out - ?

New contracts
Michael O'Donoghue - 1 year
Charley Edge - 1 year
Chris Regis - 1 year
Alex Wynter - 2 years
James Bransgrove - 3 years

No doubt there will be plenty of amendments to make to these lists over the next 3 months.

Not happy they are prepared to get rid of Edwards.

Website story implies that he is hedging his bets and seeing whats out there but we'd still sign him if he didn't get a better offer.

Might have been inclined to offer Shorey a year (assuming he was interested) but not fussed about the rest, not sure I'd have offered one to Eastman.

Gilby offer is obviously just a formality to ensure that the compo rules kick in, think he has to be offered improved terms even if he's going to turn it down or else he can go on a free.

Yes only one would like to stay from those not ffered contracts is Edwatds. The rest pretty much as expected.
Gilbey I think has to be offered an improved contract to maximise our Tribunal income so long as he stays in England.
Looks like we could end up with close to £500k for Moncur but wonder how much we have to give WH as assume they would have built a sell on clause when we bought him.
Taking Gilbey and Moncur out of the equation for next year who is our likely midfielders apart from Garvan?

Total of 22 players still under contract .
Only Garvan and Lapsie regular first team midfielders, with Dunne, Regis, Curtis and Edge still to convince. If Moncur is sold, so another experienced midfielder essential .
Drey Wright still worth resigning from those reoffered .

Expect Drey Wright to sign sometime soon, possibly as early as next week

Ben Wyatt, 20 year old defender and another ex Maldon player. Presumably this is for the U21s and doesn't count as one of McGreal's "six or seven" players that he reckons we need. Hopefully when it comes to signing them our scouting network stretches beyond the Blackwater estuary.

OWS article suggests U21s to begin with, but maybe looking to get into first team as the season progresses.

TOOT he has a habit of walking away from relegated clubs.

But certainly likes to throw his weight about.

Could be a vital member of the squad, has goals and assists need to be increased from the wide areas . Has been unlucky with injuries so a injury free season will be most welcom.

Still no sign of doing business early, as our new manager said he intended. Plenty of other clubs have been busy though.

No news yet on the future for Moncur, Gilbey or Edwards - just wondering if that might be a contributing factor in deciding who (i.e. position-wise) they must go for?

Possibly so but the fate of three midfielder shouldn't stop us addressing the serious problems at full back and centre half.

My own view is there was never any intention of deals being concluded early. Far more likely the club will wait until out of contract players become desperate and then make signings. Shopping in the bargain basement rarely results in actual bargains.

Leadbelly JM is waiting for the Euros to begin before snapping up some bargains!

The case for the defence presents Exhibit A - Cureton and Iwelumo...

...however, you're right of course, rarely does anyone find those forgotten gems that no one fancies touching with a barge pole, but turn out to be the Jewel in the Crown - more often the Jewel in India's Passage. I pay little notice to aspirational comment from anyone in anything, particularly where football is concerned. The club saying they'll shop early is certainly what fans might want to hear (akin to badge-kissing personally), but I never believed it for one minute, nor to be honest do I care they said it either.

However, to add to my point, we likely stand to lose three talented midfielders, and we all know the biggest problem to fix is the back four. Does McGreal therefore keep enough back from his budget to repair the midfield, and shop accordingly for defenders at Lidl, only to find out one (or more) of the three midfielders stay for at least another season, and he could have at least browsed at Sainsbury, or heaven forbid even at Waitrose for at least one defenders?

It works t'other way around too, he banks on keeping some of the midfield, spends most of what he has on the defence, then find he's got a massive hole in the midfield to fix as well when all three depart.

Better to wait for the dust to settle on new contract offers and player sales in my opinion, or at least until the ink is all but dry.

We might want to do business early but since contracts run until end of the month released players, unless it is a magical deal, and we wont be offering many of them, will wait and see what other options present themselves. I would and would you not?

Whether or not contracts run until the end of the month doesn't appear to have stopped many other clubs making signings.

Anyway, Dillon Barnes has signed a new three year deal.

As an example of what concerns me, Cambridge have signed 3 players in June.

The new contracts awarded and our solitary signing all suggest even greater focus on very young players for next season and beyond. Might work but, then again, it might not.
