Mrs Witham and I try to make a couple of days of it when we are away, so I'm trying to show what our opponent's towns or areas have of interest.
Apart from the dubious honour of being an early club to fold mid-season Accrington was also the most-remembered town to form a Pals Battalion early in World War 1. The concept may have been good but the result, with 584 out of 720 killed, wounded or missing in action was disastrous for the town. The new memorial is worth a look.
Prior to that Accrington was also a leader in introducing steam trams. Their extremely tall funnels gave the the nickname of the Baltic Fleet - a nod to the Kaisers' navy. Colchester never had steam trams - we did have steam trains running in the road to the gasworks but I never saw them.
Not actually in Accrington but adjacent in Burnley, the Singing Tree - technically a Panopticon - is worth a visit. Even in a gentle breeze it sings to you. |  | | |  |

Not so much a landmark or place to visit, but they were the birthplace for the "Accrington NORI", an extremely dense and hard engineering brick used in the foundations of, to name but two, Blackpool Tower and the Empire State Building. Also, the Haworth Art Gallery, housing Europe's largest public collection of Tiffany glass. |  |

I've only been to Accrington once, so don't have too much to add.
When I did go, it was cold and wet with the away end open to the elements. Before the game, me and some friends went to a local pub and were greeted with the awkward stare from everyone inside like they hadn't seen a southerner before. It was in the fanzine days and I remember us describing it like a dart stopping in mid-air! I don't think we stayed long. |  | | |

We had got there at about 11:30 and it was constant rain. It stopped raining about half way through first half.
We went to 3 pubs and we had the same experience, where the locals hated fact southerners were in their pub. The pub closest to to home end behind goal was particular fun! | | | |

Name me a market town in the UK that isn't these days. I encourage you all to research Douglas Adams' "Shoe Event Horizon", as described in "Restaurant at the End of the Universe". It's an excellent book too, worth a read. | |
