I'll finish at 60 with 38 years in the bag. Theoretically I could go earlier but its not really feasable as even going a year earlier hammers the pension.
I won't stop then though. I'll be looking to work part time. Maybe not to 68 but certainly for a few years. |

Then he's done fantastically.

Those should be targetted too.

I dont think we can ignore housing.
This also from the ONS puts the difference in stark relief.
"Median household wealth was 33 times higher among households with a head aged 65 to 74 years, compared with households in which the head was aged 16 to 24 years. Median household wealth gradually increased with age, from £15,200 for households with a head aged 16 to 24 years, to a peak of £502,500 for households with a head aged 65 to 74 years. Yet young people are told to roll their sleeves up (where lots of those manual jobs don’t exist any more), and stop buying things and save for their future.
Again, I have sympathy for those struggling on a state pension. Doesn’t change that pensioners as a group are the most well off in the country.
Why is is when we talk pensioners you default to those who has worked hard all their life and unfortunately still face poverty in their old age, but when it comes to young people you go for a work shy benefits scrounger? |

Easy credit is a problem, I agree.
The big problem is housing. Max’s 1983 example (and I’m in no way disparaging how hard he worked or sacrifices he made) was at a time when houses were 3x the average wage. That figure is now 7 times.
Realistically without the bank of mum and dad, home ownership for many is a pipe dream.
It must feel pretty hopeless at times. |

My point was I want using pensions as as example of wasted cash.
More that the 4 billion seems more significant if you take pensions out of the welfare conversation. |

Nobody is saying you didn’t.
I’m saying the demographic of pensioners you supported is very different to where we are now. Needs to change.
We need to address the benefits culture too but both things can be true. |

My pension was changed from final salary to career average in 2015. My state pension age is now 68.
I think there’s a difference between no annual increments and realigning the triple lock which is way over the working person wage increase rate. [Post edited 23 Sep 18:29]

It’s not ire.
It’s circumstance.
It’s nor any age groups fault and I feel sorry for pensioners that are struggling and there are many awful stories.
The fact remains the richest age group overall in the UK today are pensioners. Add to this if you’re 25 you have quite a few disadvantages to this who were that age even 30 years ago, |
