Also worth remembering he’s an actual QPR academy produced product, who is not learning his trade in National League South like most others. He’s playing Championship football straight out the DS learning on the job, so im gonna expect some stray balls and raw match awareness.

Stray passes and positioning can be tidied up with minutes and coaching. Goals like the ones today, that’s raw ability. Let him play and see where he can go.

Yes there were a few misplaced passes and a hospital ball across the pitch but he’ll learn, he’s barely played this season. I also saw quick, clever lay-offs and his general 1st touch is better than most, including Burrell. That alone gives him a solid base to develop from, more game time sharpens his awareness.

As for the goal, come on, that 1st is pure class. The 2nd is very well taken too. Look at his past goals and he scores all types. Agile, decent in the air and good with the ball at his feet. I hope he plays more because that’s the only way he improves, and if we’re talking genuine future sellable assets, adding today to his highlights package does no harm.

Love that goal.

Mbengue absolutly owned their player winning ball back, fell to Kolli and thats a great finish at any level. A rocket, he can strike them thats for sure.

Dear me Dembele.. simple ball down the line / poor touch in the box loses chance to shoot - come on son.

Game scrappy but end-end, we need to take advantage and not concede.

I'd say we look to be in control and playing within oursleves a little contrained by the pitch & schedule. Sheff Wed record going a goal down is terrible and dont create many chances but we need the 2nd to kill them off.

I notice when attacking down the right, Saito comes right across from the other side to create an overload and this has been working quite well.

You just know there’s a Nourry type out there in Europe crunching numbers on some soulless algorithm in the hope of saving their teams season. Frey's 9 Champ goals pop up on screen and he’s loading up the fax with a low-ball bid to buy him out of our contract, i can see it.

Plus points today ,???
at 13:17 2 Jan 2026

Yeah I agree on the leadership and brawn side of things. Sitting close to the pitch, I didn’t hear much talking between the players at times. Interesting point on Sunderland too, they’ve basically put together a whole new team but still perform like that. Xhaca the glue holding it together?

On the plus points, Madsen, there was a 1st half passage of play where he took it upon himself to take the ball off the back four, play a few give & goes, and suddenly we’d progressed up the pitch and attacking their box. Almost single handedly instigated by Nico. More of that please, taking the game by the scruff of the neck.

As mentioned I’d still like to see Field and Madsen together. Field doing the basics we know he can, plus the left foot for balance. Madsen pulling strings.

Rest Burrell for Kolli, and Kone just feels like a square peg in round hole that sometimes comes off.

Esquerdinha and his usage
at 19:34 30 Dec 2025

Its interesting how the players you mention went straight to EFL clubs off the bat. I assume thats because they already had some 1st team games under their belt which gave the loaning club more confidence (Lloyd another one). Or with players like Chair / Eze you could see even in the DS they were already EFL standard?

Most of the current DS squad are taking National League level loans, needing to earn the right for an EFL job.

With Esquerdinha’s 1st team exposure, that should be enough for a L2 club short on LBs to take a punt.

Esquerdinha and his usage
at 11:58 30 Dec 2025

From what I’ve seen so far he lacks the pace and physicality for the Champ, 2 key attributes in this league. On the ball going forward his technique is mostly quite good, but teams get at him the other way too easily and it often leads to conceding chances.

Last night that 1-2 which led to the corner should have been seen coming a mile off. He was totally out of the game, made up minimal recovery ground, and JD had to come across to sweep up.

That said, how can we really expect a lad from the DS to be Championship ready in 5-10 games. Very few are. But at the very least you want mistakes kept to a minimum while showing some signs of progression.

Agree he needs exposure to men’s football on loan, but where, National League South? I fear his pace and lack of physicality will always be the main issue. We also have another LB in the DS (Brew?) who looks to have more of those attributes. If it doesn’t work out, I can see him being pushed ahead of Esquerdinha next season as the young prospect option.

Its interesting isnt it, how most in our DS are basically deemend National League South standard. Of course they need time to develop, but if they’re playing at that level and not really standing out, then something’s not working. Or they rise to the challange of a Champ game when thrown in, i dont know..

We have the 3 Aussies coming in from playing A-League 1st team in front of a few thousand to essentially playing on glorified uni pitches on a Tuesday afternoon against 18/19yr olds. You'd think they should be standing out given their background (or is their league that bad). Give them time to adapt sure, they're almost 20, Adamson soon 23. Bennie seems the closest, but even then it is unclear what his actual position is. Still young and probably need loans, but where.. National League South?

Then take that Harvey Blair lad at Pompey. Had Mbengue on toast for most of 1st half. 22 and picked up from Liverpool academy for 500k. Raw yes but also real potential you could see that. More similar to Vale in the sense of higher upfront cost but much closer to 1st team than National League South.

But if we did…

Would you prefer the Sunderland route of player turnover dropping £150m on 'random' euro signings at £20m a pop in the hope of staying up. Somewhat selling their soul in the process, but hey now we're big time again.. anyone still got Kia's digits..

Or invest the minimum in players / Ipswich style hoovering best of champ, bank the rest, pay off debts and maybe even fund a new stadium... even if that meant doing a Luton?

I know which I’d rather.

Also for our 1st goal watch how he puts his head in and wins the 50-50 to start the attack middle of the park, if he doesn't win that Saito doesn't score.

It’s little things like that that stack the deck in your favour. In a league as competitive as the Champ, those small details add up and can decide games.

An absolute monster in that 1st season down in L1. New contract (or was it some allegation) and was never the same again.

Decent front line of Dave II, Diaz and Brewster should see them do well.

Cant see Agyemang staying long as looks a handful in this league + Diaz only loan. Gamble looks to have paid off though as coming up from L1 and signing a £5m striker is ballsy, probably sell on for double that.

Boro deserved that for sure, we were naive and played into their hands. But what fustrated me was when still in the game 1st half we failed to take advantage of our situations.

We had 2 almost identical situations with Smyth running at them on the break. Play it left and Saito is 1-1, the second scenario was literally 5 on 3 in our favour and he runs down a blind alley (again, play it left and Saito is 1-1). Not saying it would have changed much but so infuriating when i know these situations are practised in training daily, to not even get a shot away from either was just criminal.

Looking at that Boro team, no real superstars and most of the same crop from recent seasons, just extremly well drilled and effective at what they do.
