First win in 8 attempts tonight at the Lamex for COL U 17:21 - Jan 26 with 1243 viewsdurham_exile

The sorry record now is seven games without a win after defeat at Morecambe on Saturday. However, it should have been vastly different after a first half full of promise with Harriott and Smith striking the woodwork.

The goal just before half time changed the complexion of the game and by the time we were two goals adrift and chasing the game, Harry Pell had a moment of madness. There was nothing wrong with his initial challenge but his follow up suggestion of a head butt, even though he made no contact with the Shrimper defender, who clearly was RADA trained, allowed the referee to reach for his red card. Result game over and we now lose Pell’s services for the next three games.

That sign of ill discipline underpins the frustration within the team at present. The pressure is on to produce results, but SB never plays the same team twice and this is part of the problem. I cannot believe that training varies that much that it is necessary to constantly change the team format and formation.

Saturday was a case in point. Much has been made of the new signing Aramide Oteh to replace Chuck Norris but then what happens, he gets only a few second half minutes and barely touched the ball.

This evening at 7pm the Lamex Stadium awaits followed by Scunny at Home. Frankly even a team so out of form as Colchester should be looking for six points from thee two games.

Of course, it is the Colchester old boys led by Alex Revell with Ben Coker, Luke Prosser, and Chuck that we face this evening. This has to be a victory if we are to seriously think about the play offs this season (the top three has already long gone). I am furious that we are still talking about a season of consolidation (Cambridge, Newport, Carlisle, and Salford would laugh in your face if they heard that tosh.

The trouble is we wasted a golden chance to swell the coffers by £250K this season after defeat to Marine and seven defeats have dropped us to 15th in the table.
In order to reinforce the point lets have a look at the bottom of the table starting at 15th:

Cambridge 24 42 TOP

Col U 23 30
PV 25 29
Bolton 25 29
Harrogate 23 27
Scunny 24 26
Bradford 22 25
Barrow 23 23
Stevenage 22 21
Grimsby 25 21
Southend 24 20 Bottom

This puts things into context and shows what a wretched season we are having.

So how does SB address this:

First - play a settled team and the best team with a 4,4,2 or 4,3,3 formation.
Secondly - return to a flat back four.
Third - ensure that the midfield contains Stevenson, Chilvers and when back from suspension Pell and give them licence to shoot from distance.
Fourth — stop the nonsense of a single striker this is destroying Brown’s confidence and negating his ability.
Fifth — Keep Senior on the sidelines or loan him to a National League team by 1 Feb 21.
Sixth — If it is true that the team are dancing to Tony Humes tune ( a failed manager) reduce his influence on the squad and starting XI. Better still get rid of the Director of Football post.
Seventh — We brought in Hayden Mullins with a top pedigree but what is he actually doing?
Eighth — Why is Paris Cowan-Hall never given an opportunity to play.
Ninth — Stop playing out from the back and instead get the ball forward quicker.
Ten — Start to play with passion, commitment and demonstrate why we can defeat any team in this league.

Try this starting line-up tonight:

Gerken

Welch-Hayes Eastman Smith Bramall

Chilvers Stevenson Poku

Harriott Oteh Brown

Subs:

George Marshall-Miranda Clampin Folivi Bohui Sowunmi Tovide

The frustration is not just felt amongst the players. The supporters are feeling the pain too. I have watched every game this season (all 23 league matches via iFollow) as many others have done also on this board and it makes for difficult viewing at present.

The weather in Stevenage is wet and 4 degrees Celsius.

The fightback starts tonight. Three points and hopefully three goals.

Up the U’s

Humes and Ball might be content with this shite, but fans are losing patience. Never in the past 17 years have I called for a U's manager to be sacked. But it is time for a change, starting with Humes.

The thing is that Ball is pretty much picking the same team that most of us would albeit not in the same formation but two up front isn't really used in modern football. Man City are four up at half time and don't have a striker on the pitch! If the players aren't performing that's down to them. Yes Ball and others can coach them to be better players and train them to be fitter but if they're not delivering on match day that's down to the players themselves. I don't buy in to this the manager needs to be able to motivate the players rubbish. I'm pretty sure the majority of us that have ever worked for a living were motivated to do our jobs by the money we earned or the job itself and not by our bosses having to motivate us. It's the players job to be footballers and do the best for the club they're representing and if appears that they're not doing their best that's for them to be accountable for.

Also as an aside when Humes was manager we probably played some of the best and most expansive football seen by a Colchester United side in a long, long time. Unfortunately we weren't too good at defending back then but Humes didn't really lose the manager's job for footballing reasons and the external appointment that followed was more of a disaster than any of the internal ones Cowling has made.

Stunning result especially as we have nobody available to score goals.
The question is will remaining matches finish 0-0 be good enough?

Gerry 52 points should be enough to stay up!!!!

Up the U's

SB is clueless, he has ruined Jevani Brown who has gone from on fire to not even smouldering.

He plays Senior why when everyone can see he is a passenger.

He refuses to give Oteh more than 8 minutes and I haven't seen him touch the ball yet.

Josh Bohui has been dropped Michael Folivi is being wasted.

I'm beginning to think that the Chairman is happy with this dross.

Survival only just. This is woeful and at the end of the season we will lose Stevenson, Bramall and Harriott.

Grim times indeed.

Sorry but that is the truth.

It is so disappointing. Parky wouldn't come back to manage this shite.

We are advancing backwards.

Forget about promotion that's gone and top seven seems some way off.

John McGreal was better than this.
Hayden Mullins must be regretting his move.

It comes to something when they say at least we've moved a further point away from Scummend.

Bar hasn't been set too high there.

Before Christmas we scored for 18 consecutive games in the league. We now look like going 18 games without scoring.

The same Jevani Brown that was absolutely terrible for this club before this season and hadn't scored a single goal? If it wasn't for Ball getting the best out of Brown one of our most expensive signings in recent years would be languishing in the U23's or out on loan somewhere. You have to remember that Brown has scored pretty much all of his goals playing in the very same system that you're not blaming for the fact he isn't scoring.

We're the Liverpool of League Two. Six weeks ago that would've been a massive compliment but not so great now.

I do wonder if the Chairman's constant talk about this year being one of survival has somehow got into the heads of the players and management.
Talking about motivation, it can only come from inside you so, however hard a Manager might think he can motivate the individual, the effort most of the time, is a total waste of energy and it would be far better off spent doing something else!

Somebody the other day called Newcastle United a nothing club, in respect of stagnation and no progress likely.
So more likely the U’s to become the Magpies of L2, but also the Tractorboys of L2, judging by expectation of play off likelihood .

PS - EADT got it terribly wrong, Lambert doing a fine job wasting Evan’s money, long may it continue.

Saw the last 15 minutes of the Ipswich game last night. They looked sh1te, as did Sunderland. Difficult to see any real difference from average League 2 fare.

The last time we went this long without a win in the league (10 games in 2016/17) we then won seven of the next eight. I can definitely see that happening again...

In our promotion season to the Championship we went on a run of ten games with only one victory (overall 7pts from 30). My blog research shows that we have similar barren spells almost every season, though curiously not last season (accepting it was curtailed with 9 games to go). In better seasons, as you have predicted, we usually bounce-back to balance things out - as frustrating as that is.
