Inconsistency of Performance !!

Our match at Pompey, a few days after the Leicester game, same team, however....

We all complain, and say, "Same old Rangers", but how many on here play football themselves or any other sport, golf, darts, snooker, rugby, cricket, even running. Just when you think you got everything sussed, you turn up and play like you did when you were ten years old.

The stats men and data analysts need to work this one out and they can then go to the top of their "paygrade"....

Its hard to explain and has me puzzled on this fine December morning. We may say, "same old Rangers", but is it really so..

Anyone else got any examples of their own widely differing sporting endeavours ???

I get that we are frustrated with the team, but think about it, if we are consistent week in week out we will be up there challenging top spot with Coventry.

We are not, so maybe that’s the answer?

Poll: 2025/26 Ins & Outs - These are all welcomed but which one takes the cake?

I was a spin bowler in the school team (Eton). They nicknamed me “Chinaman”.
Don't suppose that would be allowed these days.

I know it’s a completely different level of football but it’s proportional, I watch a lot of youth football as my son plays.
This season they started off with a draw and five wins then lost four on the bounce without scoring and was about to lose the fifth 1-0 (never gone that many games without a goal) when we got a dramatic last minute equaliser.

Same boys, same line ups, same tactics (and we do have a plan B) but just can’t figure out why it derailed.
Hopefully a break and restarting in the New Year may help

It's sport, that’s how it goes especially in team games and why I can’t get so wound up by football.
It’s always been like this and always will. As I’ve said before, lots of post-match analysis of why we didn’t win a particular game is basically insinuating that we should win every single game. That’s never going to happen.
I’ve seen plenty of QPR games we’ve won that we should not have and games we’ve drawn/lost that we should not have. Real head-scratchers, but that’s how it is and no, i don’t have low standards or expectations, just what I think is pragmatic realism.

Agree 100% with this. It is the nature of the beast. No football team in the world is going to be consistent 100% of the time (for the reasons given above) and as much as we bemoan our own inconsistency, you only have to listen to Talksport any day of the week to know that even the best teams in the land are regularly accused of being inconsistent in some way, shape or form.

Besides, it's partly the not knowing what is going to happen each game which makes us turn up every week out of curiosity ....

No one asks for 100% consistency, for f*cks sake. With our team, it's 50% - almost exactly, in a number of games. That's the issue.

PS Aston Villa, a real team, have just completed 11 successive wins on the spin in the top division (poor old Chelsea). I think that's called counter-thesis!

Poll: What d'ya expect from our last 3 holiday games (WBA(A), Norwich(H), Sheff W(H))?

My point is consistency doesn't mean 100% consistency, Clive - sorry, I thought that was obvious. It means, as in those former QPR teams to which I alluded, turning up week on week, playing for 90 minutes, and (as you recently mentioned) trying to be good players all the time. Giving us a team, in other words, we can basically trust, even though it won't win all the time.

Also, that thread was asking about a question about consistency, not asserting it as some kind of idealistic dogma. Hope that helps.
