Oxwich Bay today 21:13 - Jul 13 with 6859 viewsscruffyjack

Went there today with the dogs for a swim at high tide at about 6:00 pm. The water was a kind of oxtail soup brown with a bubbly scum on the surface and there was no way we were setting foot into that. I don’t know what is responsible but if I was a gambling man, my money is on Welsh Water.
I’ve never anything like it before, but has anyone on here?

Yes, specifically nitrates and phosphorus, but it's algae that develops from that.

It's also the lack of rivers, rain and sediment.

Storm discharges come after rain, algal blooms after warm weather. But I'm just an apologist.

Don’t, for one minute, believe that the ‘storm’ discharge is used purely for that purpose. Welsh Water equipment is generally antiquated due to pitiful investment.
Last summer in the Broughton/Whitford area there was raw sewage floating in with the tide. They denied that that the storm discharge had been activated, and couldn’t explain the cause.
If there ever was a case of re-nationalisation.

Natural Resources Wales should be all over them like rash, prosecuting discharges and making them up their game. Jail for directors should be an option for repeated transgressions.

I agree water should never have been privatised, and they do discharge outside of their agreed limits.

The problem is any upgrades to infrastructre or fines will ned to be paid for by their customers - us.

Water bills have risen by an average of 32% over the last two years for ‘investment’. Don’t hold your breath.

They're a private company. It's not going to happen.

Actually they have changed the rules on water company bonuses. But water companies have increased the core wages at the top to counteract this.

As I understand it storm discharge is the UK system since Victorian times . To end this practice big new investments are required. The Water authorities should be forced to act on this. A Net zero for sewerage.

Ai says this about "does pollution cause Algal blooms

[Yes, pollution is a primary cause of algal blooms, specifically a type called nutrient pollution driven by excess nitrogen and phosphorus.]

You're correct. Improving our waste water system is probably the biggest infrastructure project in the UK, the most expensive, the most disruptive and the most important.

The water companies are private, if they are forced to pay for it, we'll pay for it. If we fine them for polluting we'll pay the fine. Privatising them was moronic.

Algae do "bloom" because of pollution but usually due to diffuse agricultural phosphate and nitrate pollution, like that seen in the river Wye, Usk etc rather than sewage. That's not to belittle sewage pollution.

Worth a read.

Word of the day MUCILAGE

In the Sea of Marmara they have great snot bloom of an horrible mucus of all sorts of things. The water in Istanbul often seem blue and clean but it is flushed into the seas of Marmara. Huge blooms off snot were seen and then a coating was formed on plants. This coating is moving up to the Black Sea which has its own problems. Turkiye will build more Mosques and pray for the sacred waters.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/future/a

This coating is seen in the river Wye. NRW and Environment agency are asleep at the wheel. Citizen have voted year after year to "reduce red tape". These organisation monitor and go back to sleep doing nothing. "Make us toothless and we will not make a fuss". "Where my "gong".

Councils have issued planning permission for millions of chickens in farm with no objections. They should be the protectors. It is left t voluntary organisations, Charlotte Church (god bless her and Fergal Sharkey of "Stiff little fingers" to do the job.

PS Undertones actually.

You're probably correct. I worry about future generations when this Summer's weather may well be pretty average.
