Clearly a season break, so coming out with random threads
Did anyone else on here warch the 70up documentary ,where 14 people were filmed every seven years of their lives from the age of 7, to the last documentary where they are now 70 years old.
The first programme was made in 1964.
Clearly the man that produced the series had an agenda to highlight class differences and also expectations of gender etc, with some of the very different questions he would ask the shows participants.
Found it interesting to follow different peoples lives throughout their lives. Very intruguing. Could not be done now, everyone would be following them all the time over social media, as with this only got updates every 7 years. Long enough period where one man went from being single at 21, to being married with fuve small children at 28.
Some were very successful in terms of careers, some had difficult relationships, some travelled far and wide, some had very tough lives, but would not say any had it particularly easy. Some changed personality wise and some were the same character type throughout.
Many of them had issues at times with Michael Apted the producer and some dropped out for long periods. Two have sadly passed as now too has Apted also.
Interesting also seeing the different fashions, the different homes and environments over the years. In all reality they were indeed the first tv reality stars of their time.
All of them all appeared to be decent people, and it was nice to hear that a few had met up over the years and not just in their so called class sets as Apted had wanted the documentary to show above all else.
Not known of any other such tv documentary ever to do this, so definitely an extremely interesting tv show. [Post edited 23 Sep 19:04]

Yes, I have followed it over the years. The first one I saw 'live' was 13 Up because I was 0 years of age when the first one was broadcast in 1964. I mentioned it in the 'Half Decent TV' thread as I imagine there are several people on here whose lives have run parallel to the series.
Yes, it was an intriguing series and I think it both reinforced and dispelled some of those myths that you allure to - probably reinforcing gender and class divisions more than dispelling them - though I think fulfilling oneself personally transcends any status derived from class or gender and in that respect it was interesting because the two boys who had had no silver spoons as children went on to have fulfilling personal family lives.
I actually thought the conclusion last night was really poorly put together. It was totally jumbled up, the questions were just re-hashes of previous questions, there was the tribute to the previous director who we had never met and the replacement director missed the opportunity to ask the participants several questions about their lives as human beings. I found the series, well what I saw of it, to be quite interesting. Inspirational in parts, tragic in others. It was a great idea in the first place. | |

also followed the series, first one i watched was when they were all 14, 1971 i think....
shame that fellow died 3 days after the very last programme they are going to make....and also the girl, was it jane, who they found to have blood vessels in her head which should'nt have been there.years back, she died when she was 57, don't know if that was the cause.
anyway very interesting programme.
they also showed yesterday at 7.30, interviews with 70 yo plus men and women that grew up in the victorian days, filmed in 1964, before the 7 up programme went out., never been seen before....now that was interesting. | |

I met Michael Apted the original producer / director of this series through work many years ago.
A wonderful man and he was so proud of it, a real shame he didn’t live to see it to the end

I had watched them all from 14 upwards , my Mrs had never seen it so a couple of weeks ago we binge watched them all.
Fantastic series, Nick the Yorkshire lad was my favourite, John the posh lad I thought would end up an unbearable person but turned out to be the exact opposite and did great work for charity.
Andrew seemed to have the most settled family life and did very well for himself.
Both the scousers were troubled, I’m surprised that Neil hadn’t topped himself.
Tony was a character, and the three girls from the east end ended up going in totally different direction from each other.
Paul who moved to Australia was another great bloke, I just hope his Mrs never cooked him greens!
Susie ended up very settled, having a huge inheritance probably helped!

Nick actually died 3 years ago, he knew he was dying so contacted the makers to do his final interview. It was 3 days after that interview that he passed . | |

Susie changed massively from 21 to 28.
At 21, seemed without direction, travelling with no real enthusiasm but at 28 had married and seemed a contented mature woman, as against a chain smoking neurotic young woman previously. | |
