Tim you're always worrying about one thing or the other. It's only depressing if you agree with it.

I don't. It's utter rubbish.

It made some points about the age of the squad and the wages offered. But it suffers from the same thing that I would have, commenting on Newcastle. The lack of detailed knowledge about the subject. We are trying to build something. At this stage, we are far more reliant on PL experience and mercenaries than we would like. But, if they get us established it will be worth the investment.

You're right, i always have a lingering amount of paranoia where Rangers or England are concerned which i find hard to shake off i guess. It all just seems too good to be true. I mean Junior Hoilett? Crikey. I'm trying my hardest to be optimistic but it is difficult. I'm only just recovering from Clint Hill's disallowed goal last season...

We're obviously all feeling fairly optimistic, it's clearly the strongest squad we've had for ages.

I must say, though, that in this modern age, there is no doubt that a player's desire and hunger to play and give 100% is an extremely important factor which is no longer a given. Look at Jamie Mackie and compare to certain other less motivated players (onesize?). We have possibly signed too many ageing players with little to prove and an astronomical bank balance for my liking. Will the likes of Bobby Zamora or Andy Johnson fight to the death for us? I hope so, but only time will tell.

I think you chose the wrong example there - Andy Johnson is a player who exactly fits the Mackie mould, never stops running or trying. As does Ji Sung Park for that matter.

Who cares that both are (slightly) over 30 with their engines? Nelson is significantly older at 34, but is rock hard and anyone who has seen him play can't doubt his commitment and never say die attitude, hardly a mercenary is he?

Plus Green is pretty young for a goalie (look at Given, Friedel, Schwarzer etc).

Adel, Hoillet, Mackie, Faurlin, Diakite, Fabio and Traore are all 26 or under and will likely play a part in almost every match they are available for.

Add in committed older professionals like Hill, Derry, Cisse, Cerny and SWP (can't fault his effort, only his end product) and you can only really level the aging mercenary tag at a small minority of our squad.

For me Rob Green was the one wrong signing we made.

I bet that Newcastle guy is happy that his club are no longer the centre of media attention.

He sees things in a Newcastle-centric way, and has the kindness to give us the benefit of his hard-won experience. They used to have expensive players, now they have cheap ones. And the cheap ones are better. But shouldn't he be thanking us for taking Barton off their hands? In fact aren't the profligate clubs necessary for the 'sensible' clubs to operate?

As he likes dispensing good advice, why not advise his own team to win the league? Success will surely follow. Perhaps he's saving that for his next blog.

Well I just hope that when he f*cks up - and he will - he'll have the good grace to admit to failure.I'm sure he'll be reminded since many supporters have the recollection power of an elephant - with a hard drive.

Yes I'm very hopeful about him too. Looked sharp in pre-season and was the best player on the pitch when we played Fulham at home last season.

All Green has to do is be better than Paddy Kenny though, who was pretty anonymous last season.

I can't recall a single game where he made a big positive contribution (even away at Man City he had a shocker for Zabaleta's goal) and won us points.

I can recall lost of matches where he was anonymous and while he didn't drop that many blatant clangers, lots of shots seem to go through him/under him or he just didn't seem to get to shots that looked very savable.

Kenny didn't seem to be himself for much of the season, but his save at home to Arsenal against Van Persie was one of the turning points of the game.

The guy is entitled to his opinion but that opinion is one of someone who appears to simply be a bloke who set up a website to talk about football, like you or I could. It's not like it's some in-depth analysis by Martin O'Neill or Pep Guardiola. Of course, he could turn out to be right but guesses sometimes are correct.

The article also looks as if the punchline was written before the supporting arguments were put together. Granted, a lot of our signings are over 30 but experience counts for something and what about the fact that we have secured Tarbs, Hoillett and Diakita? They are all young, exciting prospects.

The article is not worth worrying about.

Yes I know what some people are saying about Johnson but I think he is, like Mackie ( ) going to prove to be key player even though he is not the most glamourous signing.

And his form was good last year and this preseason.

With Rob Green I have never seen him be that good. I don't get where his rep has come from. And his smug face annoys me - there I said it. It's his face.

From what I've seen of Johnson he looks the sort of player we've not had for a long time, very sharp and playing off the last defender looking for the through ball.

To some extent perhaps, but I think Johnson's runs are more incisive and he seems to make more of them than Cisse, who seems like more of a goal poacher to me, but with added benefit of a powerful shot from outside the box as well.

well it's good to have two of them but johnson is definitely a poacher too. remember all those goals he scored for palace? i'm quietly hopeful for him this season but hope he's a squad player - not in my first 11 regardless of formation. he's excluded from the over-age and over-paid category put forward by the dumb-ass article though.

Green has already made one glaring mistake pre-season and was slow to react to the Turks goal. Would Paddy have done better? - nobody knows and its not pre-season that counts. I hope Rob Green comes good, but IMHO he's no Jan Steyskal and needs to up his game and concentration for the Premiership. I believe he will work hard to do his best for us and on that basis he will have my support.

1) I dont think Rob Green has looked good
2) I think Andy Johnson will be good and has looked sharp and could be a good signing for us on a free
3) I am not sayingi agree with this article at all and am annoyed at how many of his stats are wrong but I do sometimes worry this season , thinking 'If we get relegated , this could be a disaster' but that is in the back of my mind

3) is almost inconceivable with tighter money rules on the way. A nervous year until mathematical safety (hopefully with a least a couple of games to spare)

It's got to be Yarg
