Shrimps to be potted by Super U's at Fortress WHCS 21:45 - Nov 17 with 1292 viewsdurham_exile

Saturday sees the first of our double header home games against Morecambe under the tutelage of Jim Bentley and Ken McKenna, before Danny Cowley and his Imps from Lincoln arrive on Tuesday night.

Both matches will be interesting affairs, Morecambe are putting together a decent run of victories and Lincoln are just above the Super U’s in the table. Two wins and we will be in the top seven places. Bring it on.

I note that Jose Mourinho surprisingly can name Zlatan, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rojo in his squad for the visit of Newcastle. Sadly, JM cannot yet name Prosser, Dickenson, Guthrie, Murray and Senior in his squad. They will return to cement our top three place later in the season. With 29 more league games to play there are plenty of points to obtain if we are to achieve Automatic Promotion. That surely must be the aim now.

JM has been talking about team spirit and Kane Vincent-Young has talked about honesty. Clearly the dressing room is buzzing at present and the U’s must be careful not to allow complacency into the ranks.

Concentration will be required to ensure that the decent league form can continue. After all, Notts County, Exeter and Swindon will all be challenging games prior to Christmas. Oxford City denied us the chance of successive games against the Magpies, so we must make the most of our chance to improve on a wretched run of results at Meadow Lane.

Still back to this weekend and the visit of the Shrimps, who demonstrated that this league is no respecter of league positions with a hard-earned win against the Chairboys last time out.

Now we owe Morecambe after their 88th minute penalty last season cost us two vital points that would have secured seventh place and a chance at the play offs. Ultimately, we came up short and perhaps the old maxim about the league table never lying was correct, we were not good enough to go up, but another year later we can secure a promotion spot.

Morecambe will be looking to add to their mini revival and with the result against Oxford City still reverberating around the WHCS it is up to the players to put things right tomorrow. This will be our third meeting against Morecambe and we have yet to win after two drawn games last season.

Christmas shopping notwithstanding, there should be a decent crowd after the disaster to close much of the stadium a fortnight ago.

JM could be tempted to start the same team that played and won at Barnet, but he must play Sammie Szmodics and so must decide who to stand down:

The keeper and back three pick themselves, but the conundrum is midfield. Jackson, Loft, Vincent-Young are certs but who to join them. Lapslie (Marmite) will be keen to play but what about Slater, Reid and Comley. A couple will miss out because Mandron and Wright and Hanlan wish to play also.

Well we are at home and, so I would expect to see a 3,4,1,2 formation something like this:

Walker

Eastman Inniss Kent

Jackson Lapslie Loft Vincent-Young

Szmodics

Mandron Hanlan

Subs:

Gilmartin Kpekawa Kinsella Comley O’Sullivan Slater Wright

The faithful will be salivating when Dickenson and Guthrie are match fit, but we still unfortunately have time to wait.

We will of course have shipped out Kabamba and Odelusi by then.

A cold night tonight in North Essex, about 2 degrees but sunshine and 9 degrees tomorrow. Pitch superb and a good atmosphere generated by the faithful.

Enjoy the game, if results go our way we could be seventh tomorrow night.

That was very difficult viewing.

Some of our play was clueless

Not sure how Marmite got MOTM but I suppose football is all about opinions

Quite obvious how rightly Lapsie won MOTM, says it all in this goalless draw bore draw.
The highlight of the afternoon was Ranger missing a penalty on the radio on the journey home !!

Poll: No half measure either 1 or 2 ?

What on earth was JM thinking about with his team selection, playing two holding midfielders in Lapslie and Comley. This would be acceptable for an away game, but not a home game against Morecambe. The defence needed sorting out, as we were conceding too many goals at the start of the season, but it is now at the detriment of attacking. Today reminded me of the days when Lua Lua was on the bench. We used play defensively for an hour and keep the score at 0-0, then bring on Lua Lua to win the game. Instead of Lua Lua we had Wright and Reid, and they did make a difference, but these changes should have been made sooner. Also personally I think Sammie Szmodics is the most overrated player at the club. Yes he has scored six goals, and got a cracking winner against Barnet last week. But not for the first time in a home game this season he offered absolutely nothing to the team for the whole game. Summed up today when Reid laid it on a plate for him, he swung at it with his left leg and kicked his right leg and fell over. Even though we are getting results recently, the performances are not good, and we appear to be treading water until Guthrie and Dickenson return.

Wright hit the bar but that really was the only thing we did in 90 minutes. Lapslie was the worst player in blue and white but wins MOTM. I despair. As an advert for persuading me to buy another season ticket then I'm afraid I'm very far from convinced. It seems we are set up not to lose rather than make a serious effort to actually win, which makes for uninspiring viewing and certainly won't be successful in the long term. Should have stayed in the pub.

MATCH REPORT: Colchester United 0-0 Morecambe

Morecambe have only ever played Colchester United twice before and both games were drawn. Today — with three straight wins in all competitions under their belts, the Shrimps visited the Community Stadium in the Essex town for the second time ever. Colchester — eight points better off than their visitors from Lancashire before the game — have gone through a patchy run of form in recent times. Two weeks ago, they were humiliated by non-League Oxford City, who scored the only goal of their FA Cup Tie in front of the U’s own fans. They then lost their midweek EFL Trophy local derby at Southend, two-nil at Roots Hall. They got back on track in League Two last week though with a win at Barnet, who took over the seat the Shrimps had been keeping warm for them in the upper relegation position as a result. So could United do to the Shrimps what they had failed to do to the Shrimpers just over a week ago?

The hosts had more of the play during the opening exchanges but Morecambe struck on the break throughout the opening half. In fact, the visitors had the first half chance when Aaron McGowan took a shot from a long way out after nine minutes which missed the target by some distance. Four minutes later, Kevin Ellison headed just wide only for Tom Eastman to play-in Brandon Hanlan a minute later: his shot was blocked by the visiting defence for a corner. Shortly after this, Ryan Inniss found the ball at his feet from another corner and unleashed a shot which big Barry Roche saved relatively easily. With almost half an hour played, Mikael Mandron hit a shot over the Morecambe bar just after Steven Old had headed narrowly wide for the Shrimps. This followed a clearly rehearsed corner routine where skipper Alex Kenyon had nodded the ball on to him and the big Kiwi should probably have done better. Both sides had half-chances after this but the outstanding chance of the half — and for Morecambe as far as the match was concerned — arrived after 42 minutes. Frankie Kent’s wayward pass was intercepted by Aaron Wildig, who bore down on Sam Walker in the United goal. The goalkeeper managed to force the Morecambe midfielder wide though and also managed to save his eventual shot from an acute angle.

The second half followed a similar pattern. In a match of little real skill and even fewer chances, neither side managed to get a real stranglehold on the game at any time. The truth of the matter, bluntly, was that neither keeper had a difficult save to make until right at the death. With 87 minutes on the clock, substitute Drey Wright unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot from a long way out. The ball dipped in flight but it came crashing back off the bar having beaten Roche all ends up.

So Morecambe rode their luck today right at the end. The third draw in the three contests so far between the two clubs meant that John McGreal’s team dropped to twelfth in the table. With bottom of the division Chesterfield surprisingly beating Exeter and Forest Green also overcoming struggling Crewe, Morecambe also slipped in the standings to twentieth. The next game at the Globe against Old Boy Dave Artell’s Crewe on Tuesday night thus gathers even more significance for both clubs involved.

One presumes Reid, Slater and Loft were carrying injuries to play the full ninety minutes, otherwise it was strange to play to holding midfielders ( is the hole getting bigger ? ).
Szmodics got passed by in trying to support the front two, ( why did Hanlon get selected again ? ).
The team performance again lacked any guile or flair, these are where the ugly wins appear, sometimes you have to be bold and brave particularly at home , alas at the moment JMc is only one .

The only consolation is in previous seasons we would more than likely ended up loosing in games like this.
