That is frightening to read... it feels like the EFL are happy to keep seeing clubs taken for a ride, asset stripped, loaded with debt and left to rot whilst their execs are on inflated salaries and enjoying the perks of being associated with the game.

We were lucky* to keep Morton House out, but it could so easily have been us going the way of Bury, Macc, Hereford, Darlo & countless others... the EFL can't rely on every club having a fanbase, trust and board as united, canny and ultimately successful as we thankfully have.

*lucky that we had a Trust as strong as we do, lucky that we had Morris ready with a brilliant new board, & lucky that our fans came together despite personal differences to fight off the hostile takeover... the result isn't lucky, the result is a culmination of the above!

I totally agree and would add, that I do not the EFL 'O & D' test is not fit for purpose, and so is the EFL. How many teams have to be taken over and potentially destroyed in the long-term by people who are not suitable people to run a bath, never a football club, before the EFL is totally reformed to protect the clubs and the clubs fan base from such people.

This has been said before and needs saying again. Bury were in financial shit, millions of pounds in debt, a long time before Day and Dale. They were screwing small businesses long before Day and Dale. They were chasing dreams that they couldn't afford, long before Day and Dale. They had a deluded fan base long before Day and Dale. ETC, ETC

Agreed.

But if you work, as I do, in proximity to a bury fan, the following points are relevant:

1. SD1 was just an unlucky businessman, because he had the best interests of the club at heart.
2. The idea that they were borrowing wildly without a hope of repayment is just a Press myth.
3. That team assembled by Ryan Lowe that swept through L2 would also have swept through L1 and it was very unfair of the EFL to do what they did.
4. Debbie Jeavons and her panel were biased against small clubs.
5. Many bury FC fans hate the AFC set-up, but some don't and want to enjoy both rides at the same time.
6. SD2 was never liked or trusted, and had the audacity to say he didn't know bury had a league team, thereby demonstrating how out of touch he is.
7. (Although not yet expressed to me, I expect the following) it is our right to march to Radcliffe and create mayhem, at the expense of youngsters who have no affinity with bury fc, who will now be displaced because of us.

Truly the gift that keeps on giving.

This looks a massive problem for football and the EFL. Where are football's governors to prevent this sort of thing!

Questionable source of money? Questionable use of that money?

Morecambe now mortgaged to the hilt and 2nd bottom of League 1.

Looks bleak and they will likely be relegated off the off the field stuff which the regulator has failed to be strong and regulate effectively.

Are the EFL actually starting to flex their muscles? Or are the Morecambe owners that bad that even the EFL can't turn a blind eye?

I can't see anywhere HullDale that the EFL have charged anyone individually either anonymously or by name from or involved with the ownership structure at Morecambe.

But then again as we found with in our circumstances last Summer, it took the EFL about 4 months to get their act together.

Our former CEO was talking about "the law of the land" on YouTube in April 2021 and the EFL didn't announce anything until August 2021 and didn't charge anyone until 2022. It was the EFL who disclosed in an announcement that shares were traded in July 2021.

The EFL *might* get around to thinking about Morecambe at some point in 2023 or 2024 - if Morecambe still exists in its current form, hasn't entered administration or liquidation. The patient might be dead. Thank God the EFL regulate football and nothing important like driving ambulances!

For now the EFL have their hands full sorting out the Birmingham City mess with Richardson, Lopez and Southall. No individual charges there either - YET!

the potential buyer passed the F&P test but doesnt have proof of the funds required….which suggests that test doesnt include financial resources.

We need a F&P test for the F&P testing people.

I dont think the EFL is at all concerned about small clubs. If they suffer from rogue takeovers, duplicitous owners or downright incompetence, it couldnt care less. They know there are new clubs desperate to step up to EFL levels to replace those that fall out.
The EFL is enhanced by new clubs, often with bigger fanbases. From their perspective, it provides a wider spread for advertising purposes, injects new interest and eliminates any need to bother with clubs in trouble.
We are members of a body that only cares about inbound revenues and its ability to provide the committee with a claim to fame. The Championship IS the EFL it generates the cash and it gets the lions share of what is made from TV and other revenues. The richer the already-rich clubs become the harder it is for clubs like us without a "sugar daddy" to compete. We are dependent on the crumbs from the EFL table and the only solution I can see is for 48 clubs to set up a new organisation to maximise their combined revenue potential and quit the EFL, or Prem 2 as it should be called.

Sufficiency and source of funding is part and parcel of ownership approval.

It hadn't struck me before but perhaps relatively large non-league clubs like Scunthorpe could be more vulnerable to predators.
I'm not sure whoever polices the ownership of National League clubs but having said that they couldn't be more docile than the EFL I suppose!

To be fair Scunny have been in a mess for 10 years. How can any club continually spend more on wages (never mind other runnning costs) than they have had income for a full 10 years. The club is worth next to nowt but somebody will need to cover debts. What a mess. All allowed under EFL rules of course and nobody thinks it is cheating.

Got to feel for their fans though - possible administration and another relegation are realistic prospects just as happened to Stockport. Its a long way back.

These are the people in charge:

https://www.efl.com/-more/all-about-the-efl/efl-board/

I suppose they might be hoping Dale drop out of the league, then they might not have to make a decision on the outcome of the charges levelled against the club/certain individuals last year

We MUST retain our football league status. We can't give these tossers the satisfaction of sitting on their hands whilst clubs go to the wall on their watch - not on OUR watch

Staying in the league, a decision will eventually be made. Up till that point, our hands are tied to a large extent. But god help them when that comes to a conclusion

If they think they can sleep at night on their lucrative salaries, maybe we should *start* compiling a dossier on their ineptitude (i'm hoping this is already being done, on the quiet). It really is an absolute scandal, and it needs to be brought into the full glare of national publicity at some point - when the time is right

They've closed the stadium and his flat sits within it. Homeless tonight. What barstewards. And they aren't the only club on the brink - the Arena at Coventry also in the spotlight once more. Its not likely to end happily is it?
