I thought he had a good game with what he does which is enable other with his movement and positional sense, he not the most skillful player but how many times have we seen midfielders when we look to or have to attack push on, far, too early sitting in a line with the forwards waiting for the ball to come to them, Cooper playing on that inside left position feeds the winger, covers the fullback's forward runs ands get forward into the box in areas to at least have a goal scoring opportunity and given the tempo of our play he was still doing it in the dying minutes of the game.
We had instances in the past when we had Paterson, Piroe and Ntcham playing together but it didn't work because they didn't get any service and didn't combine well defensively when needed, even last season the service to Placheta's and Tymon's runs were not seen by Paterson time and time again because as Paterson cut inside he became totally unaware of what was happening on his left.
You have to have players on the pitch who are aware what is happening around them and can react to them quickly, both going forward and defensively. Both Cooper and Franco did that well yesterday along with Grimes linking up well.
Last season Paterson , Platino and Grimes became the starting midfield and our performances picked up. We caused teams problems with quick balls through the middle so attacking wise better but it wasn't strong enough defensively against Leicester inexperienced young player or poor team work we fell apart, Fulton was soon restored to the midfield. Yesterday's game was won on solid team work and I think Cooper's work goes unnoticed at times.

Very good summary, and i agree about Cooper an ex pro once told me to watch players off the ball follow a player not the play for part of the game . When ypu watxh Cooper he us always moving into space either in advance positions or filling a gap defensively ..whilst also getting amongst it to win anball. He reminds me a little of John Mahoney his football not always pretty but pops up everywhere. He was unlucky not to get on the score sheet yesterday too

Just watched the highlight and he had dropped to the left back position as Tjoe followed a run inside, after the opposition play broke down as Ronald and Tjoe didn't get the right positions he was quite vocal with them both of them advising them to where they should be. He had to do it with Manning who did his usual drive forward which Cooper covered but Manning seemed inclined to stay in a centreforward position, Cooper made sure he got back into his full back roll to keep the team shape

Some people in the comments above aren’t taking into consideration that it’s only the third game (including the cup). Some lovely interplay evident in the second half especially- I can definitely sense a big improvement. With some quality additions at 10 and centre half we will be a tough team this season.
Thing is though, in the early stages most of us can accept players are still gelling, still learning about each other, what we can't accept is a lack of energy and effort.
Against Boro we were slow, turgid, lacking spirit for much of the game and that's inexcusable and needs calling out.
Yesterday was a different story. It was much better but even so still plenty of room for improvement.
We have tickets for Cardiff and we are going to West Brom, if we can have a minimum of 4 points from those 2 games and the performance remains on an upward curve then nbody should be unhappy.
Grimes in particular needs to keep going as he did yesterday, be the player we have so randomly seen and then even I will be singing his praises.

A players movement is so important, it creates a pass and it can even make a pass look great.
I remember a couple of years ago there was a discussiin(use of a better word) about how slow we were at moving the ball forward and it was based around the game that day, after being at the game I wrote how the lack of movement was preventing the ball being played forward but I was told I was incorrect despite that person(not you) not being there.
But that aside.....you are absolutely correct, movement off the ball is so important and yet it's something many fans don't acknowledge enough or grasp that effects other factors in a game.
