Worst places you have visited for an AWAY day fixture !! 14:09 - Oct 29 with 21738 viewsnumptydumpty

After visiting the not so delightful "SWANSEA" wondered about other hotels, pubs, towns that were just downright derelict and awful to visit... Don't get to too many away games these days, but crikey Swansea town and pubs had about as much appeal as climbing Kilimanjaro stark b*ll**k naked...

A place to visit for culture, class and style, it truly was not !!!

Appreciate the weather being dark, dank, windy, wet and not so mild didn't exactly add to the mix well, but crikey was pleased it is not my own personal abode...Working for the Swansea tourist board could well be a challenge, no doubt !!!

Any other delights and stories anyone has to offer of altermative similar waste zones, people have had the misfortune to frequent for an away day special ??

Sure there will be many contenders...

Stamford Bridge pre money has to be right up there. Shithole, no atmosphere, miles from the pitch.

Honorable mentions to Luton (especially that infamous cup game there in the 80s) and the old Den (again especially for a night league cup second leg where very few of us travelled).

Didn't mind Maine Road, but maybe that was because of Jamie Pollock and the fact I was staying in Liverpool that weekend so had a short trip "home". Also The Dell had plenty of character although we were pretty caged in the away end.

Loved White Hart Lane but as someone mentioned the walk from the station was a punish. Oxford and Plough Lane were very ramshackle affairs.

It was okayish, the year I'm talking about we were stuck In the side stand not behind the goal, the toilets were Insanely difficult to get into due to there being a single line In and out.

We were at the same game

interesting to know what year barnsley was....

sheffield united 1976...worst ever...

yeovil fa cup 1987....not locals....

cardiff, any year...70's, 80's and 90's.

leeds 1973...

and the dreaded den, any year up until 1993.

**interesting to know what year barnsley was....**

It was the year that they got promoted to the Prem, they were I believe unbeaten when we arrived, we tonked them on their own patch 4-0 I think.

We were parked right by the ground, on the way out we were driving through the crowds with the car windows open and Barnsley fans were walking past and punching people In cars, we had our scarfs on the back parcel shelf (mistake) I had my hands on the steering wheel and got a right hander straight In the kisser, a copper told us to stay In the car and then the traffic started moving again.

I heard that two Female QPR fans returned to their car to find It smashed up.

Tranmere Rovers are the friendliest fans In the world, always had good games and visits up there.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Yeovil FA Cup game was a great day out. Remember being in a pub and trying the local scrumpy and had my hand stamped as they only allowed one pint per person.

Very lively before, during and after the game. Police did not have a clue what to do.

Long walk back to the station after the game, soaked and covered in mud

Hull, 2010/11. Couldn't believe how apocalyptic it was when I got off the train!

After getting over the shock of that, we had the pleasure of watching an uneventful 0-0 draw + Taarabt to throw his toys out of the pram early doors, looking and gesturing at the bench to be subbed off...

I was at 0v0 match but the one after the London bombings, all went off when Hull started chanting about it. Agree worst place I’ve visited for an Away match, pubs were dreadful and clearly remember looking at a local paper and they had houses in the area for sale for 15k, which pretty much says it all.

The Manor Ground in the nineties with Ray Hartford as our manager. Always hated that open away end especially in the pissing rain as it was that particular day watching one of the worst (if not the worst) QPR performance of all time.

I did question my sanity that day.

Got in the ground really early that day and was in the covered side terrace with fences separating us from the home fans quite a while before most of the QPR fans arrived. I remember they were all singing the celery song and we were giving them the usual sheep shagger, ooh arr type stuff.

Dreadful weather, mudbath sloping pitch and we made hard work of it for a while. I remember their striker missing a one on one sitter before we took charge.

I was one of many that ended up on the pitch afterwards and think I had one of the corner flags at one stage. Coaches took ages to get away afterwards and there was a bit of hostility about.

Danny Kelly once noted that the most depressing walk in English football was from Seven Sisters Tube to Spurs - and he's a Spurs fan!

While another said in relation to their new stadium, "It's like a huge great spaceship has landed in the middle of a warzone!"

Anyhow, I reckon Spurs fans may not be familiar with the lower leagues, so in the spirit of the worst places generally - i.e. not just the stadiumitself - I give you Swindon. For the walk from Swindon Train/Bus Stations to the County Ground makes Tottenham N17 look like Beverley Hills! And that's before you consider the local inhabitants...

(Incidentally, googling indicates that the name "Swindon" likely derives from the Old English words "swīn" (swine/pig) and "dūn" (hill), meaning "pig hill", but I can't imagine any self-respecting pig would ever live there had they a choice)

That walk from Seven Sisters to White Hart Lane - a never ending walk of doom.Even in the 80s and 90s, hard to understand that there wasnt a tube station closer to the ground.

Swindon, i thought would have been better used as a speedway track. Days and better are the two words that come to mind.

Opinions eh.

I like Swindon.

They split the away fans between two stands in a league cup match 10 /15 years ago and I remember singing 'we're not getting wet' to QPR fans in the open stand when it pissed down.

Should have paid the extra £3 you tightarses!

I'd actually stick up for Hull a bit these days if you drink/eat round the old town or the marina. The bit outside and around the station, and the death star Spoons opposite, remain an absolute hell hole though.

Think i was there that day. Very vague memories of the chanting to the other section of QPR fans.

Can't remember any other grounds, away fans were in different sections apart from the Dell also. Although, my memories could be playing tricks on me

Used to hate coming out of WHL and navigating the walk back to Seven Sisters. Remember coming out one year and being attacked by a large mob of spurs waiting at a bus stop and seeing a Stanley blade flash in front of my face, thankfully missing me by centimetres, otherwise my mush would have looked like Adam Ant with his red makeup .

Tottenham - horrid place

Does anyone remember the old Valley? Not particularly threatening, but felt like the middle of nowhere outside and a vast concrete wasteland inside. I’ve seen Roman ruins in better nick.

I live right by the Spurs stadium and whilst it's certainly still a bit lively, it really ain't that bad. Bruce Grove for eg is gentrified af. Bruce Castle park is lovely. Every pub has a massive beer garden. Chick King is the GOAT

Yes, went to the Valley around 1979!

That concrete terrace was amazing, it must have been an incredible atmosphere when full.

Vote here for Wigan and the DW. It was 10 odd years ago in the play-off season, but remember it being an absolute dive. No decent pubs and a solid 30 minute walk to the station - not helped by watching 180 minutes of football there that season and not seeing a single goal.

Stoke I don't mind, because there is one absolute corker of a pub I'm very fond of.

When you read about post-war crowds of 60-70,000 there, you wonder who they were, where did they then vanish to and how they ever got there on a match day. Attendance must have been compulsory for dock workers.

The old East Terrace was amazing. There was a pub not far from the ground called The Valley (now demolished) and it had a huge picture covering a whole wall of that Terrace when it was full, might of been for their record crowd for an FA Cup game when there were 80K in the ground.

My mates being mostly Charlton fans were there clearing up the ground in preparation for one of the moving back to the Valley false dawns and one of my friends saved all the club records. Boxes of team sheets, wage books etc. He struck a deal with the club who bought them back from him years later after he had stored and restored them. They had been left to rot and squatters had been using the books for starting fires, so he saved a lot of the clubs history for them.

Football was still the working mans game back then so the admission price would have been low. Although most would of walked to the ground public transport would have also been cheap compared to today.

The sheer size and steepness of that terrace, a health and safety nightmare!
