Worst places you have visited for an AWAY day fixture !! 14:09 - Oct 29 with 21710 viewsnumptydumpty

After visiting the not so delightful "SWANSEA" wondered about other hotels, pubs, towns that were just downright derelict and awful to visit... Don't get to too many away games these days, but crikey Swansea town and pubs had about as much appeal as climbing Kilimanjaro stark b*ll**k naked...

A place to visit for culture, class and style, it truly was not !!!

Appreciate the weather being dark, dank, windy, wet and not so mild didn't exactly add to the mix well, but crikey was pleased it is not my own personal abode...Working for the Swansea tourist board could well be a challenge, no doubt !!!

Any other delights and stories anyone has to offer of altermative similar waste zones, people have had the misfortune to frequent for an away day special ??

Sure there will be many contenders...

Yes, Port Vale is a place where something is seriously not right, (even the Police Horses looked nervous).

surprised nobody has mentioned doncaster rovers old belle vue ground.

1985 third round cup game, open terrace, pissing down with rain, open toilet with a wall to piss on and the middle of the miners strike with a few of them at the back of the away end.

I live right by the Spurs stadium and whilst it's certainly still a bit lively, it really ain't that bad. Bruce Grove for eg is gentrified af. Bruce Castle park is lovely. Every pub has a massive beer garden. Chick King is the GOAT

When you read about post-war crowds of 60-70,000 there, you wonder who they were, where did they then vanish to and how they ever got there on a match day. Attendance must have been compulsory for dock workers.

I was there on a family outing for the last game of Division 2 in the 1957/58 season, with a crowd of circa 60,000, which apparently was a record for a second division match.

My father was a Blackburn fan & Charlton were in second place one point ahead of Blackburn. Blackburn did their best to chuck away a 4-1 lead in the last 5 minutes, but held on to win 4-3 & win promotion.

I was a 5 year old & we all stood at the front of the crowd, but I've no recollection of any crush.

I do recall the chant of ROD----NEE echoing around the ground at the FA Cup game in 1970.

Many years ago, myself and a couple of mates were drinking at the Barge Aground in Barking when some of the local Skins started talking football, West Ham football that is. They were interested when I informed 'em we followed QPR, then expressed incredulity we were such a rubbish mob considering the shit hole of an area that Loftus Rd was located in. Looked alright to me I thought, then again those rose coloured spectacles...

Gillingham's away end was shocking when it was a terrace and even worse now it is a temporary stand. The town centre is f*cked and the majority of the populace are scumbags. Apologies to any Medway Rs on here who reside in the area, I of course exclude you from my sweeping generalisation statement above.

The whole of Lootown should be flattened.

Oi, how dare you accurately describe Gillingham!!

Having been to 80 odd grounds of the current 92 with Rangers plus a few more which are now out of the league I have been to some right khazis following us. Rotherham and Barnsley always stick out especially the old Rotherham ground at Millmoor. Remember the away end at Chesterfield with the open roof toilets. Grimsby was pretty grim. The old Vetch with Swansea was equally grim. Losing there 4-0 on a Sunday night when Chris Plummer got sent off. We re-signed Gallen the following day. Middlesbrough’s a very bleak place in general. Special mentions for Bradford, Hull and Scunthorpe. But I think Rotherham tops the lot. Walking through the town centre was actually quite sad.

**interesting to know what year barnsley was....**

It was the year that they got promoted to the Prem, they were I believe unbeaten when we arrived, we tonked them on their own patch 4-0 I think.

We were parked right by the ground, on the way out we were driving through the crowds with the car windows open and Barnsley fans were walking past and punching people In cars, we had our scarfs on the back parcel shelf (mistake) I had my hands on the steering wheel and got a right hander straight In the kisser, a copper told us to stay In the car and then the traffic started moving again.

I heard that two Female QPR fans returned to their car to find It smashed up.

Tranmere Rovers are the friendliest fans In the world, always had good games and visits up there.

I was in that car with the two women Ted. It was me and couple of mates with their partners, one of whom was driving.

We were in traffic coming out of the car park, saw some Rangers fans we knew, we had won 3-1 so were calling to them . Next thing g my mate in the passenger seat gets a clump through the window . He jumps out to have a word, I get out to get him back in. Next thing I know I’m in the floor crawling back into the car after get whacked in the back of the head. The car is then pummelled by a load of Northern tw@ts . Absolutely beaten to shit.

The police turn up. Five people, two women now in tears, in a battered motor and ask to see in the boot for a weapon as they were told we threatened the Barnsley fans.

Police were utter crap. Went back to the station to fill out reports and take statements. Sod all happened from that.

I had forgotten about that until you said that. So Barnsley may top Stoke in Trent as the biggest shithole I’ve been to,

I enjoyed Rotherham as an away day! Some really decent pubs. Quite a few to choose from. Locals were friendly. I think that is the Yorkshire town with the away pub near to the station decked out in a scarf of every team imaginable. The new ground is also quite nice and an interesting design.

Barnsley is a shithole and rough. Forced to drink in the leisure centre bar by the police on one of my visits. Just shuffled everyone from the station up there.

Blackburn is still more miserable though.

The old Vetch was quite an eyesore, with a motley collection of stands.

Not sure what season but Brighton were playing at some athletic stadium, pitch was miles away, awful game, think it was 0-0

The Withdean - and Matty Rose scoring a screamer. Awful ground though.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end

Blackburn's the worst one on our current slate IMO.
A place where your acceptable pub options basically begin and end with a Wetherspoons.

That’s why the Blackburn fan came down to thank the Rangers fans that stickered up the view from his hostility box. Did him a right favour.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Watching Joey Beauchamp annihilate us at the old Manor Ground in Oxford, a ground of nine separate stands assembled by enthusiastic attendance at car boot sales, was another low one.

That is right up there with one of the worst Rangers performances I’ve seen. I kept it together until Scully let rip and pinged in the best goal of the game.

That did me in and I went into a verbal, spittle flecked, sweary mary meltdown.

Still makes me mad now. F**k off you fuc*king c*nts, stick it up your f*cking arse, you c*nts.

I reckon that was the game where our Manager Mick Harford got his Merc smashed up.

I've seen us lose at that old shithouse more times than I've seen us win, the win was about 50 Years ago and Rodney Marsh headed the winner right In front of the home end In the final minute where I was standing, I went bloody mental and was promptly chased out of the ground by the local boot boys, they never caught me, I legged to that housing estate behind the Albion pub.

To be fair, people were a lot thinner back then, moved faster and sort of slipped away.

That walk from Seven Sisters to White Hart Lane - a never ending walk of doom.Even in the 80s and 90s, hard to understand that there wasnt a tube station closer to the ground.

Swindon, i thought would have been better used as a speedway track. Days and better are the two words that come to mind.
[Post edited 30 Oct 8:16]

Actually re Spurs, Tottenham Hale (next stop on on Victoria Line) is a few minutes closer walk than Seven Sisters, though still a bit of a trek.

While Northumberland Park (to/from Liverpool St) is a 15 minute walk from WHL.

Southend on a Friday night in the snow, loosing 4-0 or whatever it was. A 12 year old offered me out at the station afterwards, truly terrible night in a truly terrible place.

When I was at Uni in Manchester I did a lot of the Northern towns and they really do all blend into one. My two miserable memories though...

The old temporary stand at Blackpool slowly sinking lower and lower into the mud mirroring Rangers sitting deeper and deeper trying to preserve a 0-0 in the pissing rain.
The Rangers defence didn't hold, luckily the stand did.

A 0-0 in the freezing cold at Barnsley with a couple of hundred Rangers fans rattling around a stand built for 6000.
Before the game I went to the 'leisure centre' at the top of the hill to get warm, but decided I'd rather just sit in my car after spending 5 minutes in there

Not been there since they went up (and hilariously down) but Luton on many, many levels. It had two saving graces: easy to get to and more importantly, away from and what I can only imagine the reaction it got from pundits and fans used to heated seats and insulated commentary boxes.

Selhurst Park was always a shìt day out for me. Stuck in that poxy uncovered corner and got pìssed on, mission getting there and back due to "maintenance" and we invariably played shìt.

I spent 9 months on a contract where I had to go to Chesterfield at least once a week but have never been to the ground. The only circumstances that would get me back there would be in the unlikely event we were in the Champions league final and UEFA went with the theme of "shìt Yorkshire towns with a shìt street market" and held it there.
