5 Things About Pompey Game 11:45 - Oct 12 with 2577 viewsSaintNick

1. The Northam fanzone was rammed, I know some don't like fanzones etc, but they play a part in the game and on Sunday the Northam one was buzzing, the two bands who played threw in a few Saints songs including a rousing version of "You dirty skate B*stards we f*ckin hate you" I was surprised the plu wasn't pulled.

2. Mark Dennis gave a rousing speech in the fanzone, again I don't think it would have been approved by the club, but the fans loved it. Rickie Lamert's was not quite in the same bracket but well received.

3. This was one of the loudest and best atmospheres at St Mary's

4. Good to see a packed Chapel end, I suspect that it might well become the next Itchen North with all the issues that occurred, meaning that the club will end up having to take action of some sort.

5. Great atmosphere in town after the match

1. The Blue Few were no better than the average set of away fans. I could hear them occasionally from the Itchen North, but no more than I'd expect from say, Watford.

2. I did hear them booing JWP, so despite one or two on here deriding him as a skate, it's great that he gets under their skin and I'm delighted he's back.

3. A micro detail here, but the playing of 'Fortunate Son' before kick off with the lyric "Some folks are born made to wave the flag - they're red, white and blue" was unfortunate given the colours of the skate's kit.

4. The PA system seemed louder than usual - was this designed to drown out the skates' futile verbal insults before KO?

5. SMS acoustics are clearly shit, but to me we sounded bloody loud.

Well done SFC.

The Chapel doesn't usually sell out, so hopefully they'll leave us alone.

I actually saw more trouble for the dibble to deal with yesterday in the Kingsland, where it borders the away end. Some fun and games there after the game.

I keep saying the worst thing that could happen to the chapel is for it to become a thing.

As it stands right now it's just about perfect, a few rows of people having a laugh, winding up the away fans and doing something different to the northam.

For the lot who want to do performative celebrations and sing the same songs every game the Northam is the place to be, leave us alone and let us do our thing.

as for my five

1. The atmosphere was brilliant, i thought the whole ground turned up and made it exactly what it should be gor a game like that

2. The skates away support seems to be getting worse each time, they're so f*cking meek and all seemed to be about 7 stone wet through

3. Town before and after was great, was briliant to see so many old faces out including a few i'd not seen in years, real buzz to the place too, maybe not the underlying tension and menace without the bubble though and more of a party atmosphere

4. As annoying as the sending off was if you're not going to hammer them that's as good a way to win a derby as i can think of, down to 10 men for 60 mins, backs against the wall and just outfight them, in fact it felt to me like our players just wanted it more, which you couldn't say last season

5. I don't think i'd realised just how sh*t they are until yesterday, absolutely woeful side and we should definitely do the league double over them this season

1) Fantastic atmosphere. It was a proper derby atmosphere. The whole ground singing and great to see a huge crowd of fans in the Chapel rubbing it in next to the barriers at the end.

2) Mark Dennis is brilliant and well worth having him make a speech.

3) Trouble after the game with fences being pulled down. Seen videos of both sides of the fence and angry Pompey fans really angry to fight and hurt people. It did make me think about why the bubble is there. There would be chaos if the fans had mixed.

4) Ended up at the Engineers Arms after the game. Had a few drinks there. About an hour after the game, police cars and vans started turning up to the confusion of us all. News that the Pompey busses were coming, and that news emptied the whole pub onto the streets outside People got out of their cars, beeping horns, swinging scarves and flags. We gave the skates some stick, with beers in our hands. They were all frothing at the mouth on their busses, banging the windows, headbutting the window. The moment that hit home we had bragging rights. A wonderful moment that just about made the day.

5) Arguably Bragg shouldn't have started but starting a Saints fan in a derby makes sense. He is a young player I like. He will learn. It didn't matter. What a day it was.

We beat the skates 😂🤣😅

Ref 3
Easy to give it the biggun when you’ve got a load of OB and a fence separating you. They’re as quiet as mice when they’re outnumbered, but quite happy to bully people when they know they’ve got more numbers
Where I live I’m surrounded by the gobshites, very quick to shut up when stood up to. I was on a train and one was gobbing off to an old chap, soon shut up when I piped up that I too was “dirty scum” he got off the train at the same stop as me and literally ran off across the car park. Obviously didn’t want to take me up on the offer of a tear up in the car park. Absolute cowards and that’s why I hate them so much

We could do with a few quiet games there after yesterday and the end of the Bristol City game. Bolton and QPR the next 2 so should give us that hopefully.

I do fear we're already past the beginning of the end though.

Just had a look on the ticket site and there are bloody loads of empty seats in Block 20 for the Bolton game.

Funnily enough, I seem to recall that the Itchen North often used to be the last part of the ground to sell out back in the day when the away fans were in the Northam.

Tickets for Saturday are not particularly cheap, I noticed. ÂŁ30 a pop for an adult ticket in the Family Stand for a game against Bolton is a pretty punchy price TBF.

1 I thought the ref gave us nothing and could have booked a few more of them.

2 I had a ÂŁ10 accumulator on saints to win, Larin to score anytime , Downes to get booked and both teams to score. Larin missed his only chance early on, Downes cut out any naughtiness and the defense tightened up :-)

3 the guy next to me loved Bananas and chomped 3 in the second half.

4 I was sat in the Itchen opposite the away fans and I didn’t think anyone was particularly loud or quiet.

5 we won with 10 get in !

I must have seen you then Southamptonfan! We walked along the footpath by the pub as the busses and God knows how many meat wagons came along and absolutely loved the stick reminding them of the result. The knuckle heads in the busses were truly on form and had absolutely no answer!

1) Even saw a couple of flares let off in the Chapel to add to the atmosphere

2) Thought Mark Dennis was brilliant, but also that he got away with a lot with the digs at the skates almost inciting them to have a go

3) Loved the scoreboard screens both during the game. No mention of the opposition, just "visitors" and no club colour, and after the game with the points tally for each team and league position

4) Thought we were a bit lucky in that they were absolute cr@p and though had their shooting boots on, they just didn't know how to use them

5) Just glad we won the game not only because of all the obvious reasons - it was the skates after all - but also could you imagine how Bragg would have felt had we not won. Noted also how the rest of the team inc Tonda did their best to reassure him

1 First home league win against the Sailor Boys for 22 years,
don't leave it that long again, some of of us will not be alive to see it.

2, Please boys, make sure you beat them in February at Fratton, as we last won there in the League few days before the Cup Final in 76, 50 long years ago.
I was on there away terrace that night as a 14 year kid, they didn't take Saints winning with a late goal well
Anyone else go that night?

3 When Ricky and Mark Dennis were doing their bit 45 min pre KO, that part of the Northam was well overcrowded and could have been a dangerous bottleneck.

4 Didn't see any of our dribbler fans attending yesterday

5 First visit to the Dell bar yesterday, very good tbf

Re 2. Yes I was there Channon scoring near the end virtually relegating them , I was 15 and yes I could see them coming round we didn’t hang about . One other thing you said we haven’t beaten them in the league there for 50 years that’s only because they’ve been so shit and been well below us we’ve hardly played them.

Off the top of my head I can only think of 5 times we've played there in the league since 76
87, 04, 05, 12 and February this year

I'm working for a Coventry fan at the moment, he said about how long it had been since we last beat them in the league, I pointed out that we'd played them 5 times before yesterday in the last 20 odd years

Did they mention in commentary Pompey never beaten us in the league at St Mary’s ?

They only beat us in cup in 2010, because they bought in some players they couldn’t afford shortly before they went into Admin again

90% of the young lads in front of us were over form the Northam just for the skate game.

Against Bolton it will be back to normal - we can all sit down and just watch the game.

1. The Chapel exploded as predicted for this game - buoyed by young lads with season tickets in the Northam who moved over to abuse the skates. Don't see it becoming the new Itchen North as its just the back rows of Block 21 & 20 that make some noise every game and that's sewn up by season ticket holders from on here.

2. Saints won - no more match analysis needed.

3. The gluten free food options at the ground are rubbish

4. I was singing "f#@k off Pompey, skate c#@ts" along to The Liquidator and just assumed that everyone else was as well.

5. Saints won

No, they only gave pro-Pompey stats, which when you consider how poor their all-time record against us is, are not that easy to find. For the return fixture, they'll only mention how long it's been since we won a league game there, and ignore all the other stats, which are massively in our favour.

The media, including Blackmore, could mention that it will be 22 years without a league win against us when we play them at Fratton, that we have a 6 match unbeaten run against them in all competitions, and that we have won more than twice as many derby games as they have: 21-9. But, they won't.

Pompey may not be very good at football, and their fans boo their team a lot, but they are very good at propaganda.

I've mentioned that elsewhere with the implication that they must have beaten us loads of times!

Quite enjoy the fanzone, and The Dell bar despite opposition initially, though it does take ages to get a beer
But my worry is with the location behind the Northam (it can't go anywhere else though!) it creates an incredible bottleneck and won't be long before some young kiddie gets hurt with the crush

Not even that many. We've only played 35 league games against them.

My first games were in the mid-60s and for decades it was unheard of for Pompey to beat Saints. You just considered it a routine victory. It wasn't that big a deal.
