Johan Cruyff - BBC Sport did you know...
at 05:57 25 Mar 2016

Reading through the 'did you know?' stuff on BBC website about such a marvelous player and manager, there was one thing that caught my eye - relevant to our own current plight;
Johan Cruyff apparently almost signed for Leicester under Jock Wallace.
Would anyone care to share their memories of that unbelievable great escape back at Layer Road in 1988-89 season when somehow we landed Jock Wallace as manager? I remember two things in particular;
1. the incredible energy and belief that one talisman managed to bring to a dressing room, and five league wins on the trot to ensure safety for another year
2. sadly I also remember putting all the money I had from my paper round for the past few weeks on Colchester going up as champions for the following season at the local Corals; only for us to be relegated instead!

RIP Johan Cruyff...and Jock Wallace...

Maryland Crab Cakes...now that is something worth trying at a football match.
Gourmet Food Truck at WHCS...bring it on

As for the pies...I have always overheard other Col Utd fans swearing by the pies at Rochdale.

I also spend a lot of time in South Africa as that's where my wife is from. At the rugby the number of people that bring in their own gigantic bags of biltong...such a brilliant complement to a few pints.

Lobster?
you come in 'ere, givin' it all that?? (ref: the joke about the lobster that got banned from the pub)

A lobster walks into a bar one evening & asks the barman for a pint,
The barman says "i'm not serving you",
"Why not" asks the lobster
Cos everynight you come in here giving it all that - (hold both arms up hands opening & shutting your hands - imitating a lobster/a chopsy so & so)

I love the idea that with the entire global footballing universe to choose from, our only chance of survival are fictional comic book footballing superheroes.
Agreed with previous posts that to suggest anyone from Burton Albion as your top pick from our league would be considered laughable not long ago - same for Vardy at Leicester.
I am in no position to comment on players from league 1, but my thoughts on q's 1&2;
1. Suarez - scores for fun and is a total pest
2. Harry Kane - scores for fun and is a total pest

If you could pick one player (part II)

OK, I am going to stop shortly.
If you could pick one player from a vintage Colchester United era, in his prime, in his pomp, to save us from the dreaded relegation, who would it be?

OK, neither this, nor my previous post will any awards...or save us from relegation.
However, it is crucially important nonetheless.
If there were one food that you would want to buy when at the ground, what would it be?
For those overseas, what are the more interesting foods you are able to pick up at a sports ground? Pies are the nuts, but are we missing something?
In the UAE, Shawarma is pretty common at the ground...very very good.

OK guys. In amongst keeping the fat lady from singing, perhaps everyone could suspend their disbelief for a moment.
If you were able to buy one player, money no object, that could save our season and prevent relegation, who would it be?
1. Globally
2. Premier League
3. League 1

The Peter principle
at 10:35 7 Dec 2015

Wow. Well it is good to hit a raw nerve every now and then.
Some pretty off topic ramblings there OakTree to be honest mate.

The bulk of my post was regarding the Peter principle. It was not any statement of fact or otherwise as to whether the academy was a success or not. In fact I never even stated that TH was good, bad, the 'Messiah' or otherwise. My words were in fact;
'If you look at TH, I think most people said he was really very good in a youth or academy set up.'

My only point on this topic was whether we might be losing some talented coaching individuals as a function of the hire and fire policies we see in football. Again, this is a professional sport phenomenon in the main.

I am confused as to why you wish RC to stay, given the litany of mistakes he is making in your opinion.

Finally, I was not looking for a critique as to why we have no player budget, merely that there isn't one. That is fact. If the names being bandied around this message board are unrealistic due to the manager's wage or transfer fund demands, then why bother mentioning them? Pep isn't going to Man Utd don't you know? And funnily enough isn't coming to Col Utd either.

I don't want to unleash the beast in you here fella, but I thought your response was a bit aggressive and not particularly cogent or in line with the initial thread.

The Peter principle
at 09:49 4 Dec 2015

The Peter principle is a concept in management theory formulated by Laurence J. Peter in which the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate's performance in their current role, rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. Thus, employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively, and "managers rise to the level of their incompetence."

Is there a very real threat here that if we continue to hire from within, and the new manager, who was perfectly competent in his previous role, gets binned, that we end up shipping out all that is/was good about our academy?
If you look at TH, I think most people said he was really very good in a youth or academy set up. Apart from the ridiculous abuse that he had to suffer from a minority of fans, why should we not try to offer him something back in his previous role? Although this might sound pretty stupid at first, consider what his next role in football is likely to be. With a light and not particularly proficient managerial track record, like it as not, he will end up in some coaching or academy role elsewhere - which allegedly he is good at. So, all we have done is lose good coaching ability. Lets hope that Brown and McGreal do slightly better in their elevated roles before we lose all of our academy talent.

On a slightly different note, I agree that we should be looking externally for a new manager, but with the express notion that there is no money in the coffers. This may make it difficult to hire who we all desire, but that is unfortunately also the reality.

I also think the Cowling bashers need to rethink their stance on this guy. He is very good for the club in my opinion.

Blades 2 - 3 U's. Noah's view.
at 08:44 18 Sep 2015

What a fantastic and positive report.
Living in the UAE I haven't managed to see the U's for way too long, and certainly not to comment one way or the other about whether Humes is the right man for the job or not.
Two observations though;
1. Although BBC Sport stats are not always representative of the actual game, the past two games, both away, have seen significantly more possession and shots in favour of Colchester than I can remember in recent times, regardless of whether Chesterfield had ten men or not.
2. The Chairman has made an enormous difference to the security of the club, and is trying to build for a sustainable future. There may be differences of opinion as to how he goes about it, but there is at least a method. He has also stuck by TH. Up until such time as that vote of confidence is eroded, by results or otherwise, I think U's fans should be galvanized towards creating a winning atmosphere at home. I know I am not talking from a position of strength, but whichever way you look at it, the decision for now has been made. Get over it. Move on. Cheer on your side.

Turned into more of a rant than I thought, sorry.

A win for U's tomorrow I think.

McCaffrey plies his trade in Middle East now. I think he still has a show on Showtime Arabia or something, so still doing Prem football.
Every now and again you stumble upon him handing out free rank beer in a bar before a big game. Friendly enough bloke though.

to BluenWightExile - where are you looking at property in France?
at 06:34 12 Jun 2015

Hi BluenWight,
So i have found a link to the property on one of the websites that it is advertised on.
I havent pushed the marketing of the property at all as French rural property just sits there. Like I said, we love the house, just dont use it enough.
The pictures dont really do the property justice. The renovation has made sure to open up what are often very small roomed and gloomy old farmhouses. LIke I said before, the renovation was done by the previous owners; some bits are fantastic, and others were maybe done when money became a little tighter, but overall the place is terrific.
There are parts of the house that date back a good few hundred years, so big thick walls and a really solid structure.
I will be there this Summer with my family (wife and 3 kids), and likely heaps of extended family and stragglers. If it piques your curiosity then feel free to come and take a look - easier when we are there I reckon, although not impossible otherwise.
Link is as follows;
http://www.perigord-immobilier.com/EN/Bien/Detail/e5aa02a3-2ad9-418a-a45d-a837d6
The price is just the price that has been on that website for a while. dont pay too much attention to it.

Let me know what you think. Like I said, I am happy to swap emails if you want to follow up anything on a non public forum.

Hihi,
Thanks for replying back to me. Perhaps it might be easier for me to get your email and to send you some details directly there.
The property itself is in a hamlet called Teillots - there is a Marie and a church but no shops. Nearest large town is Hautefort about 5kms away with a beautiful Chateau and gardens and all number of bars, restaurants, cafes and a big supermarket.
The property was very sympathetically renovated by the previous owners. My only reason for selling is that I live in the UAE and therefore dont get there as much as I would like. I dont want it to fall into disrepair, and M. Hollande has made sure that renting it out is a loss leader.
Let me know if you want more detail. Rural property in France as you are no doubt aware is on its ass, and therefore this particular property may not be quite as expensive as you might think...and certainly way way cheaper than it was say 5years ago.

Irrational dislike for teams...in our division or not...
at 05:36 4 Mar 2011

Was chatting with my brother a couple of days ago, about who is most likely to suffer the ignominy of relegation out of the Football League, and it looks almost a certainty for Stockport. However, there I was without knowing quite how or why, saying I would love it if "Stinky Macc" went down instead. Not even sure where my irrational dislike of Macclesfield has come from, but I am somehow very proud to not like them at all.
In fact one of the greatest days at Fortress Layer Road was when we beat the Silkmen 5-1...if I remember rightly, there was a piledriver of note from Guy Branston from about 2000 yards that almost broke the Layer Road Stand in two.
Anyone else out there with an unreasonable dislike for a particular team? Can anyone dream up a reason to justify my passionate hatred for Stinky Macc?
