Things you don't see in football anymore 09:09 - Mar 18 with 4499 views | MytchettSaint | Don't know why but it I thought about the fad that was prevalent in the 00's that disappeared as fast as it arrived. Mainly Arsenal, but the practice of footballers smearing vicks vaporub on the chest of their shirts. I firmly believe the disappearance of this practice coincided with Arsenals decline in winning league titles, nothing to do with them failing to replace great players with crapper ones.

Things you don't see in football anymore on 15:20 - Mar 18 by LondonSaint76 | A PA system where the speakers are out of sync - Number, Number, Number, 7, 7, 7, Terry, Terry, Terry, Paine, Paine, Paine… Really, really muddy pitches with no grass in the penalty area. Then a member of ground staff repainting the penalty spot at half time. Supporters climbing up the floodlight pylons from a heaving terrace to get a decent view of the game. A player (usually a defender) coming over to the bench to get given a sock tie (which were just thin white strips of material) the real reason was to get some specific tactical info from the bench that needed implementing. The player would then relay the instructions on to the other players on the pitch and drop the sock tie on the floor when the ref wasn’t looking. Chris Nicholl used to be the recipient of the sock tie and tactical instructions from our bench when he played for us. Half time scoreboards that were letters of the alphabet that got the scores manually added as they came through, usually by a man in a white coat. Some of those scoreboards ran horizontally at pitch level along the low wall in front of the stand near the halfway line. You were stuffed if you didn’t have a programme as you didn’t know who games A,B, C & D ect were without one. Golden Goal tickets and the anxious wait for the announcement if you had 20m 37s and the analogue clock above the main stand said twenty past three exactly when we scored the first goal of the game! At home games, the players chipping the pre match practise balls towards a member of the ground staff positioned up near the corner flag and said member of the ground staff catching them in a large sack! Wagon Wheels that were entitled to wear the name with pride! Nowadays they are about the size of the thermostat dial on my central heating! Players who drive ordinary cars - always remember Ted McDougall was considered flash as he had a brand new MGB GT in neon blue. One of the other players had a Triumph TR7 (can’t remember who). Erling Haaland’s new bronze Porsche has a spoiler on the back that’s so big you could sit three or four people in a line behind the car on barstools and serve them a meal off of it… [Post edited 18 Mar 19:39]

Refs & officials wearing Black kit. Teams were not allowed to wear anything resembling black because it would clash with ref . Also the ball inside the quadrant when taking corners.

Re your last point about the ball being inside the quadrant when taking a corner, I am told that we have got some bright spark somewhere that has decided that the interpretation of the rule can be the same as the ‘whole of the ball over the whole of the line’ rule for a goal as we are used to seeing on the graphics used by goal line technology. This in effect means that if just 5% of the ball overlaps the outside 5% of the arc it is now legal. Apparently it has been raised at several meetings at County FA and FA level as in some quarters it is considered as tantamount to cheating. Be interesting to see if anything happens in the summer when they all have their AGM’s and maybe IFAB might be asked to look at it? Here’s an ex-pro’s take on the reason why it happens - you decide… https://www.sportbible.com/football/football-news/premier-league-corner-kick-law [Post edited 22 Mar 16:26]

I understand that point about a % of the ball being on the quadrant line. But I have seen some corners taken when the whole of the ball was very obviously outside the quadrant. Don't suppose it makes much difference but it's just an observation. Also what about keepers carrying the ball outside the box before they kick / release it, that should be picked up as handball. I remember at the Dell the crowd were so close to the pitch that players were not able to have a proper run up to the ball to take corners.

Agreed, the keepers carrying the ball over the line should be picked up on. Ah yes, The Dell, now that ground really was the true meaning of home advantage. There were plenty of visiting players who didn’t like the lack of space when taking a corner. For the years we had Matt Le Tiss fit and firing on all cylinders it was almost a double advantage as he had the skill to cope with the lack of space and still ping in a mean corner with no real run up, just a couple of steps. Talking of keepers, another thing you don’t see now is the keeper marking the pitch on the edge of the box. Peter Shilton and others used to walk out to the edge of the penalty box and mark the pitch in line with both posts by churning up the grass with their studs right through the white line. Shilton got booked just before KO by one ref at The Dell for doing it! The following home game he did it about 5 mins after KO when the action was up the other end of the pitch so the match officials were otherwise engaged!

I remember watching Wimbledon warm up before a game at the Dell. The Brass Band were doing their usual March around the pitch when Vinnie Jones decided to target the Big Bass Drum player. Vinnie in the middle of the pitch lined up the poor fella with the drum & hit straight on the back of the head with tha ball. That was when we had characters in football, very entertaining ( but not if you were the big bass drum player).
