Where are all the insects? 15:54 - Jul 22 with 22510 views | hubble | It's the height of summer. Usually there are loads of insects buzzing around, especially flies. Right now, in the corner of West London, there are none.

Where are all the insects? on 16:53 - Aug 15 with 2938 views | CamberleyR | I meant to post this the other day but after taking our dogs for their walk around the fields and lanes near where I live (south Somerset/Dorset border), I noticed loads of insects and butterflies in particular out there. My village, Milborne Port, is semi rural and surrounded by fields and farmland so I don't know whether that's a factor.

When you used to play spot ie kicking ball against the wall, there were always loads. The population of daddy long legs seemed to be greatly diminished also... Also, why they called "Daddy Long Legs" Surely in today's world that's very un PC and inappropriate. And the blighters require a new name. Answers on a postcard perhaps !!! They've migrated to washing lines, yesterday took my pants off the line and saw one hanging off it so went to put it back on the line and it ran in my pants. I gave them a good shake out, couldn't see it so I assume it dropped out.(hopefully!)

Not quite the inspiration for the phrase "Ants in your Pants" but near enough Metallica.

They are now calling a mother a Birthing Person over here and Delta Airlines are no longer going to announce "ladies and Gentlemen its time to board " after they figure out what to say to include everybody . Not sure what they are going to do about manhole covers yet The Ladybirds/ person are in decline due to cold weather and infistation of Asian ladybirds apparantly

Where are all the insects? on 13:48 - May 27 with 544 views | R_from_afar | Brace yourselves, I am going to post something positive! We've just been on holiday in Dorset, in West Bexington. Some of the land just east of the village is owned by the National Trust and farmed in a nature-friendly way. There seemed to be constant birdsong around the village, including from chaffinches; I haven't seen any where I live in the Bracknell area for years, possibly because a virus sometimes spread by bird feeders is affecting them. Then we went for a walk along the coast path, east past the National Trust land. You could see that some fields had been managed as meadows rather than set to rye grass and there were a lot of thick hedges. It was noticeable that there were a lot of flying insects, far more than I see at home, and as for the birdlife: Tremendous . Linnets, skylarks (loads of them), corn buntings, meadow pipits, stonechats, whitethroats, garden warblers, plus the usual suspects. I used to see linnets in the garden of my family home when I was young but for years, I haven't seen any apart from when I've been out in the wilds. It was all very uplifting.

Where are all the insects? on 16:49 - Jul 22 by 222gers | I haven't noticed the famous annual Flying Ant Day, although there were a couple of days that I didn't go out. How the flying ants coordinate with one another baffles me. |
