The Buzzcocks song ‘Ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn’t have fallen in love with’ not really paying much attention to the sentiment until I did.

I find that very hurtful.
As I did on the night....

The Labour Party.

Hate to admit to this now but I voted Labour and suddenly currently, i weirdly now believe the Tories actually had more of an idea and the lies from the Labour leadership has been on another level !!!

Donald Trump.

When he was first appointed thought America had collectively lost the plot. This time I kind of thought he was the better option..

I really don't get Curb, Jimmy. I have tried over and over.

It's way too cringey for my taste.

Fair dos, he’s an arsehole, but also a hero….

It’s incredibly clever. I kind of think of it as: when I’m on the tube and some wee prick is blaring drill, tik tok or some other such shite (never a sun ra fan) I have to resist the urge to slap them and f*ck their phone out of the door at the next stop.

Let’s say I did that - who’s the areshole?

Brussels Sprouts and Gherkins !!

A lot of that comes from how stuff was cooked in the 70s and 80s. Veggies were basically boiled to death.

I hated sprouts but now I like them. Fry them up, a bit of butter and olive oil, some bacon. A bit of chef-y salt (the Maldon flakey shit) and it's all good.

Art: I thought it was dull but now, I love certain styles. On a recent holiday, I even arranged for Mrs R from Afar and I to visit *three* art galleries, without being coerced.

Living without playing football: I thought I'd feel bereft when I gave up playing football, at the age of 58, but rekindling my love of table tennis 🏓 has more than filled the void. I'm playing three times a week, I've got coaching videos coming out of my ears, and I'll happily sit and watch proper matches in their entirety.

Beetroot (and radishes and coleslaw): I never could stand them - I used to refer to coleslaw as the Devil's toenails - but I have now embraced them all. Messy haha. I'm not sure I'll ever change my mind about bread and butter pudding, though, Philistine that I am.

Some art, by John William Waterhouse.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Same here with "Cats in the cradle". Just thought it was a soft-rock cover of a song with a quirky chorus...... then when my son was born my missus played it to me again (the original Harry Chapin version, which was actually a reflection of his own lost relationship with his father) and I took note of the lyrics and ... *wallop* it really hit me what the song was about.

Father's in particular are so focussed on 'providing for my family' that they spend so long working and not seeing the children that they lose sight of what is actually really important... the kids. I put time with them over material things all day long.

The Shawshank Redemption. I used to love it but I started watching it again last week and I hated it and had to turn if off. I think it might be Morgan Freeman's smug and all-knowing voiceover that did it for me.

The same applies to Red Dwarf - whenever I catch a repeat on TV I can't believe how much I liked it in the 80s.

On a brighter note, I now fancy Sophie in series 1 and 2 of Peep Show for the first time. She is sooo Rainbow Rhythms.

In football: Gianluca Vialli (RIP). Thought he was a mindless, right wing thug when he played for Chelsea. Later found out he was an articulate and well spoken right wing nationalist.

In life: Cheese and Onion crisps. No semblance of savoury as a kid. Now indispensable as munchies.

I used to think that Brentford played in Middlesex but I now know that they are definitely from the London Borough of Hounslow.

Doesn’t he come from Italian aristocracy? What a player though.

History, hated it at school, couldn’t wait to give it up ing the 4th year (year 10).
Love it now, can’t get enough of it, books or film/TV.
Started with 20th Century but now going back further.

I'm the same. No interest in history at school but about 20 years ago started on the 20th century and have dabbled since and am now dipping my toes into pre-history (thanks to a recommendation for 'The Dawn of Everything' on here by DM). Not sure I will be able to do too many more centuries before I pop my clogs but I do have a penchance for reading about how things happened.

Ladies gymnastics. Couldn't bear watching it as a kid. Nowadays I'm in awe of their balance, strength, skill, bravery etc.

Olives. Green and black olives are a staple for me now. Hated them with a passion for years but their umami and salty goodness is just amazing and a perfect snack.

Oooh, olives, salty almonds and freezing cold dry sherry, holiday heaven.

1970s music. I read a review of Chris Stapleton at the O2 by NW5 Hoop in the Spectator where he described his sound as imported intact from 1972 (I’m paraphrasing, in case he’s reading). As a true son of punk I would have curled my lip in my best Sid Vicious sneer up to five years ago but I’ve finally opened my mind and started to appreciate the craft and quality that went into music then. I don’t know to what extent it’s customer taste or the economics of the recording industry but listening to music of any genre and there seems to be so much more going on. I might have mentioned Mrs Sheen likes an NPR jazz station WGBO of Newark and they often have a 70s funk show on Sunday lunchtime. Never heard the tracks or in most cases the bands, but the sound is sensational - brass, percussion, guitars, singers - it sounds like there’s at least a dozen in the studio at once. What we’ve lost…
