Jims won manager of the year at the North West Football awards tonight, a lovely accolade for his efforts

Well done and an award for the club too as well really.

He had a clear plan, was determined enough to stick to his beliefs when things went wrong and illustrated he recognised what was required to be successful. Above all, he created a culture of belief amongst the squads he built, leading to one of the most memorable seasons in the club’s history.

Interesting to see the comments about Stockport’s goals on Saturday!

Very much deserves it and could well be on track to get it again if Stockport carry on as they have been.

He would've left in 2024 had Burton wanted him.

JM is doing brilliantly with Stockport and is proving his quality / flexibility in terms of playing style and tactics.

It makes you wonder who the Board would have appointed as his replacement if he had gone to Burton?
And how things would have panned out subsequently?
One for the “what if” alternative historians.

Congratulations Jim.
But the cynic in me still thinks that much of the credit should be shared with Taylor and Done
If Watson bites the bullet at any stage, I would be testing the water to see if either or both fancied the job.

Ooh! Now that's a good suggestion. Something that hadn't crossed my mind.

Can’t read full article as it’s behind a paywall. The opening paragraph says he turned them down after they approached the club for permission to speak to him.

Is there something else in the article that contradicts that and supports the statement “ He would've left in 2024 had Burton wanted him.”?

I thought you meant you'd not heard Burton approaching him?
I heard from a very good source that McNulty had interviewed for the job but they chose Bowyer ahead of him. Believe what you like.

Yeah, was fully aware of the approach. There was much discussion at the time including on here.

I’m believing what evidence is presented.

At present, this thread contains a link with information stating he turned them down. Cheers for posting it.

Edit: Gary Bowyer was appointed Burton boss 24 days after the article that states McNulty turned them down.

I was certainly told that he turned it down because he didn’t believe the project at Burton was any better than what he had at Dale at the time.

I think it would be unfair to suggest McNulty was simply looking for an exit at the first opportunity. Equally, we have to be realistic about football management. Careers can spiral downward quickly, and success inevitably attracts interest from clubs at a higher level or with greater resources. I’m sure he wouldn’t have turned down every opportunity indefinitely, as turned out to be the case. The point is that I believe, having spoken to them, he clearly didn’t see Burton as a sufficiently attractive step at that particular moment, which is quite different from actively looking for a way out of Dale.
