Yes, I was reminded of Holloway's story-telling powers.

On the debate about why we got rid of Warnock, wasn't the reason that (like many other clubs) we were obsessed with staying up at any price, and were desperate to show that we belonged in the Premiership?

I don't know the exact reason, but looking back I think there were so many problems behind closed doors that the best thing to happen to club probably is what has happened.

Well the dressing room couldn't have looked more gone from the outside at the time of writing, he later then said as much himself as you pointed out.

Approving of a more communicative owner than the psycho despot that unambiguously treated us like sh!t not exactly controversial either. Still isn't a bad thing per se and doesn't automatically equate to naivety (eg, idk, Darragh McAnthony for instance).

The point I'm making here is that these things being true and the club finding a decade of ways to deteriorate further since are not mutually exclusive unless you're arguing there's no possible way it could have turned out differently.

Yeh I think we're basically agreeing but QPR Report, as he so helpfully does, posted up a Guardian article from the time recently where I was quoted saying how wonderful it was that Tony was on Twitter and that although Warnock had done well to get us up it looked like it had gone away from him etc etc and I cringed and don't think either of those things any more and with hindsight it's pretty dire. This happens when I look back at just about everything I write tbh.

With hindsight, with hindsight, by letting the dressing room dictate that, it helped set us up for several years of wnkr footballers doing as they pleased taking the club for a ride. Not the only reason, loads of factors, but St Joey basically being allowed to get in the chairman's ear about a manager who'd just got us promoted was a big first step. Had we stood by Warnock who knows? Probably not, but given who we replaced him with and what happened next, a few players being a bit grumpy during a loss of form in a difficult part of the year was possibly overreacted to. It also doesn't say much for you as a club that a guy like him comes in and turns it round and you bin him off for a big name at first sign of trouble, again another step on the road to us becoming a pretty dislikeable club.

The Twitter thing, yes some use it better than others, McAnthony, Holt. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but I think it has been for Tony, because he seems (or has seemed at times in the past) very led by it, and actually QPR Twitter is a pretty aggressive and hostile place. You look down his mentions on a day to day basis when things like Nahki Wells going to Bristol City happens and it's absolutely vile. It's not a good thing him being led to think that's how QPR fans think and feel and talk and act. Extreme views have at times lead him to make extreme decisions, or populist decisions to try and please a rabid group who will never be pleased and don't know what they're talking about. We've seen this week that some pretty aggressive, prominent accounts that have harrassed and bullied QPR fans and pushed extreme views about certain fans, managers and people that work at the club are sock puppets being run by one person - one person with form for it as well.

There's happy medium between Briatore's horrid approach, like you say, and Fernandes being quite as wedded as he once was to that torrent of extreme opinion from social media. And I am talking specifically about social media here. Interviews, fans forums, podcasts, whatever, owners need to be accountable, need to engage and communicate with the fan base as a whole, through a variety of methods. I'm referring specifically to Twitter and Facebook, which are very different now to how they were when he arrived here in 2011, increasingly aggressive and vile and by and large not worth paying any attention to.

Granted, but then Norwich had a much better summer, much more settled backroom situation, Lambert allowed to do as he wished and build the team he wanted. And we were still doing ok in that game until St Josephine got himself sent off.

All true, and as I say I backed Warnock to the very end. But that was the first time I thought that rather than a blip, he didn't have it in him to reverse the rot

I don't want to quote the whole post Clive, but you can only go on the data you have available at the time.

Fernandes did seem like an improvement. Who could predict you'd be mere weeks away from incoherent 3am gibberish

My view at the time and has since never changed was this:
Things were not great at that point, but they were far from dreadful. The more meaningful problem was that the Board had given up a bit and were not prepared to give him anything like the kind of money to spend as they did with the next two managers, who then proceeded to spaff it up the wall in a way Warnock was unlikely to have done. In addition, what we needed was a grown up approach: going down was not the end of the world. Go down, take the hit, Neil leaves, start again with a ton more money in the bank and rebuild. Or, Neil pulls off the miracle that even a fkwit like Hughes managed, and we're up anyway and wahey, we're off. It was a stupid decision then, and it only looks worse with hindsight.

Bare bones.

yeah as much fun as those last few home games and the City game were if we had gone down that season with Warnock and possibly even sacked him that summer, with the money we had we could have really built something. Only have to look a Burnley and Leicester to see what can be achieved

I still blame Barton for everything and starting our decline, when we’d only just made it back to the Prem. Like a bloody virus destroying and dividing our dressing room, and slating Warnock. I loved that promotion season, loved the squad and as fans we felt together (yes winning helps!). Barton ruined it in less than 6 months.

Yeh, proper "internet, serious business" small time stuff on the face of it.

In short there's a number of Twitter accounts that Tweet about QPR and right wing politics. Love Brexit and hate anybody who dares to report on QPR as a journalist, run a QPR website, appear on a QPR podcast and so on. Anybody who does one of those things, or doesn't like Brexit, can expect to be followed around on that site, told how thick they are, told how fat they are, stuff like that. Small time, playground bullying really. Easily ignored.

* before this turns into a Brexit thread, I'm not making a comment on the merits of Brexit one way or the other, I'm just saying it is a common theme among these sock puppet accounts that the profiles they set up with and the non-QPR stuff they Tweet about is always right wing politics and pro-Brexit.

Bout a week ago some actor (I have to say I hadn't heard of him before) did a deep dive on one of these accounts, forgotten the guy's name by think it was 'Mark Johnson' whose profile said he was a black headteacher in West London, three kids, QPR, Brexiteer "which makes me a pariah in the education system" or something along those lines. All these profiles have a similar thing - generic untraceable profile picture (or some other random pic), really common name, everyday job, QPR and often something political in the bio. It's never a picture of anybody you've ever seen at a QPR match.

This 'headteacher' account had been doing all the bullying and harrassing of other QPR fans and people of different political persuasions that these accounts specialise in, repeatedly branding people racist and so on. Anyway said actor managed to find the actual guy in this Mark Johnson's profile picture, turns out it's actually a lecturer at some university in Texas. Got in contact with him, confirmed the picture was him but the account wasn't, posted it all up on the site at which point whoever was running the Mark Johnson 'sock puppet' account panicked and deleted it.

He's since called out a number of other accounts, some of which have gone quiet, some of which have disappeared, and some of which have tried to respond with some pretty amateurish photoshopped attempts to prove they're a real person after all. Actor man has invited them to FaceTime him and call him a wnkr to his face to prove they're a real person, but they don't take him up on it, because they can't of course.

Like I say, this is all pretty petty and small time. Some of the stuff that these accounts have been used for has been pretty unpleasant. Posts like "you know Finney's lost an argument when he brings up how poorly his mum is" while Fin is sitting at his mother's hospital bedside aren't uncommon. "Clive Whittingham, the guy who spaffed his dead dad's money on pretending to be a sports journalist" another fine example. Now, again, you could just say ignore it, it's pretty vile but it's just words, and that's fine I agree with you, it used to really get to me but over the last year I've just blocked or muted them and got on with it. They've accused me of stealing photographs for the site and tried to get me into trouble that way, gone through my linkedin and got in touch with my boss to try and get me fired for doing LFW work at work that sort of thing. Weird, too much time on their hands, but ok, except...

... Middlesbrough H during the McClaren season, one of these accounts decided to live tweet how I was behaving during the match, which is slightly unsettling and sinister in itself, knowing you're being watched, but again, ok if that's how you want to conduct yourself. Anyway, seat next to me in F Block is shared between Tracey and Jas who do half the games each cos of work commitments. Jas was in the seat that day and her other half had a few afterwards and objected to this account stalking us at the game, Tweeted it back (lethal, as soon as you respond this guy's got you). He then received a whole load of direct messages into his Twitter account from whoever this is saying that actually I'd been touching Jas up during games, kissing at half time, basically having an affair with his wife and he needs to get involved and intervene.

It becomes a bit more serious, I think, than a poxy Twitter spat and playground bullying when somebody is willing to set up anonymous accounts and try to break up a marriage and a very long standing friendship, just because they don't like me running a QPR website or what I say on it. Especially as, it turns out, all these accounts are sock puppets being run by one person.

Like you say, this has been going on at QPR for 25 years, since the internet first arrived and Tommy Nintendo went after Dave Thomas for the heinous crime of editing a fanzine. If it's another fan doing it, that's pretty sad. If it's somebody who works for or at the club, that's a bigger problem because like I say they've waged several campaigns against season ticket holders, they went after Ian Taylor in a big way when he worked here, and Ian Holloway as well.

It's so weird, quite funny when you look at it as an outsider, unbelievably sad and petty, but believe me when you're on the end of it and they start really coming after you it's deeply unpleasant, plays on your mind, keeps you from sleeping...

So looks like I made 27, but Clive that is absolutely horrendous and I'm sorry you've had to go through that. Really.

Also, its mental. I mean absolutely barmy, whoever it is on the other end of that...has got some serious issues. Real issues.

Crazy.

Edit - actually if my amateur psychology is anything to go by, they are probably insanely jealous of you, your reputation, and the reputable QPR things you are involved in (this site, the pod, access to the club etc) and they aren't. And are a crackpot psycho by the sounds of it. These things always seem to boil down to jealousy in my view.

I did not realise the extent of this that is horrible.

I saw the actor guys posts - I think he was on the podcast once or I may be confusing him. He detailed one of the linked accounts this person uses and it was one that had sent me a nasty message at some point- I think about my kids so I blocked him.

I use my full name on twitter and dont tweet much about QPR.

I do think this would be much better if people had to have identity verified before using an account- even if their handle was not their name on display.

Blimey thats all quite scary. I've seen some of the stuff aimed at Clive on twitter but the personal bits are horrible and has brought it all back for me.

Many moons ago I used to run my own QPR website (1998-2009 RIP) and to be honest for the first 5/6 years all the feedback I got was very nice and supportive but then it all got a bit sinister and I had emails to me having a go at me for robbing the club of money which was bollox as I genuinely didn't make a penny from the site, it ended up costing me a few grand over the years to run it.

I also had stuff like I know where you drink before games and I'm gonna kill you etc and the worst of them was they knew my wife, who I always went to games with, and were going to give her the seeing to she deserved so all quite unsettling especially as it was to my own email as this was pre social media so I didn't really know what to do. I think if it happened now I'd have a better idea of what to do but back then I did nothing, didn't even tell the wife at the time and just became very anxious about it all and avoided pubs with loads of QPR fans in before away games going to quieter spots.

I'd have some people come upto me at games saying they liked the website and a general chat about QPR which was nice but I was always very wary of them and came across as a right arsehole most of the time as I didn't know who had been having a pop at me and if this was all part of it. It was part of the reason I knocked the site on the head in the end as it all got a bit to much for me and after having kids I didn't want people targeting them. I do look back now and think I should have said something but I didn't want them to know they were getting to me so always tried to ignore them and not let them know they were getting to me, didn't work though.

I certainly couldn't have coped mentally doing it during the social media age where people can send messages to my phone any time day or night abusing me. one bloke non stop harassing me after every game about Holloway last season brought it all back and left me feeling very anxious again.

So fair play to Clive, Dave Thomas, Finney and anyone else who have to deal with this now, supporting a football team and trying to give something back such as a podcast, fanzine, website etc shouldn't make you a target in this way.

Miss your site Dave used to go on there all the time.
Same pattern there though isn’t it?
Starts off with complaints about nicking pictures, costing club money, who does he think he is.
Escalates into making it clear they know where you sit and drink.
Escalated further into serious targeting of ppl close to you.

Be amazed if it’s not the same person all the way through.

Nothing compared to Dave and Clive’s stories, but I used to work for a couple of MPs and was named by a hostile Times journalist as supportive of a small Left wing publication that had lost a legal battle against another MP.

It was intended as a proxy attack on the MPs but it revealed my Twitter account and I was bombarded with abuse and labelled a anti Semite and Trot amongst other things. One of the MPs was attacked by dozens of sock puppet accounts and a really nasty Parody one that attacked his family and employees. They were all subject to Doxxing (the publication of their private data such as phone numbers and addresses). The really suspicious thing was the scale of attacks from 5 or 6 accounts which indicated it was a professional set up with a someone manning the accounts full time.

It's the anonymity of social media , brings out the worst in people I think. Sad reading those experiences. Fair play to anyone working on QPR websites and fanzines with all that going on. That's serious stuff to have to deal with.

Occasional providers of half decent House music.

Be amazed if it’s not the same person all the way through.

yeah I did have one from the club threatening legal action against using pictures of games so I recreated games using my Subbuteo set from when I was a kid which worked well but was a right pain using photoshop to redo the kits so just stopped using them.

That sort of stuff I think is easy to brush off but i found the other bits too much for me

What was the site called Dave? I enjoy / enjoyed your AKUTRs articles so would have been surprised if I’d missed it.

Clive, you'd be astonished by how common that story increasingly is. Have plenty of friends with who've had to quit jobs /delete entire digital footprints because of co-ordinated sock puppet accounts harassing them/trying to get them sacked. And it's always a "retired army" anonymous account that spends the rest of its time retweeting Trump and Brexit stuff
