Should we sign RND on a permanent in January if it’s an option or wait til the end of the season and see what’s available? He’s an upgrade on Paal but is he anything more than a solid defender? I’d be reasonably happy to sign him but can’t shift that nagging doubt that we should be looking to sign someone better.

Unless someone tells me differently we are still losing £1.3M per month funded by our owners. We only have the squad we have thanks to the Eze money (again) but unless we can sell one of our players for decent money (Chair) we are going to have to cut our cloth accordingly.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I’d have taken that £5m that was allegedly offered for Varane before the season started. There’s no way he’s worth that now.

In reality what we could sell Chair for now wouldn’t cover the cost of signing Edwards.

Definitely more pace and swing on them, I thought, Mart?

I do think Madsen has been better than Chair on corners, but Oslo's point has to be considered, and also that we may not be as good this season at positioning, runs, decoys etc.

If Chair isn't taking them, I'm not sure what else he could do.
Too slow too hang back on the halfway line, not useful inside the box. Maybe on the edge of the area for a knock down?

True - not sure we'll be getting another keeper though. Unless they think they can finally offload Nardi and replace him.

I really don't think the manager reckons Frey is a better option than the other forwards available.

I'd love to know what is keeping the other FW's above them in the pecking order.

Maybe Kone was advised by the Sports scientists to rest out, but I don't think that Norwich game was asking for a bullying number 9 to come on and just try to foul everyone.

That game probably needed a Kolli type to maybe try and create something, or run at some tired players who were nervous.

I'm with you, I think this manager can see this, but his hands are tied by something from above.

At least we could see Palladini shouting for Mahon to come on in the old days!

If that’s the case we should send him back once we’ve identified a replacement. What’s the point of managing an injury prone player who's not even our responsibility ultimately.

RB, we have Dunne and Mbengue, who now look like this is their best position, especially when they play together.

LB, we have Larkeche, who is away more than JCS, and Esq, who is in a defensive position, a liability, which is not his fault, as he's young and still learning.

RND is never fit, as his record shows, so we had Field fill in now and again. Field himself can only do it if the oppo winger hes up against is not speedster, otherwise he gets caughht out. Not really his fault as Field is trying hard and is really a DMC. Now, with Field out and RND not available for half the matches, we have a massive problem.

JCS can fill in there, but hes like RND. So, maybe we can rotate them.

Really this all goes back to Jan last year when we learned Paal would not renew and we did not want to give him a bumper contract he was after and Watford moved away from him due to loss of form just before then.

So, we have had two transfer windows to sort this out and have not done it. We took a risk on the LB position with two youngsters and got caught out. RND was the quick fix, but hes really fit enough. Skillwise RND is way better than the Bidwell type he gets associated with and hes faster (but not a speedster just faster than Bids). Hes a very useful and good Champ standard LB ... when hes ever fit. His wages are way too high which is why SU needed some rest bite from them. And thats an ex-prem side.

We should not sign him perm, another loan next year coud be an option if its only % of his wages not the full amount. But right now in Jan we need a LB, because we needed one last Jan and we needed one this Aug and we need one now. This needs to be sorted ASAP before anything else. We sorted out the forwards and wingers problem on the Champ cheap, that was amazing and well done. Now finally get the LB sorted, this should be the easy cheaper one to sort out. BTW Dale cannot play Champ LB, hes an AMC.

Solid 7/10(imo) every game . Deceptively quick and wins in the air more often as not.
Fantastic performance yesterday

I think he's excellent and just needs to be sensibly managed. For those of us who can remember that far back, his style of play and ability to read the game reminds me of David Bardsley, who had a very similar way of playing at right back.

Never knowingly right.

He’s also mastered the perfect level of aggression for a full back. Sprints into tackles but often pulls out as he gets there if he can see a potential foul developing. I think he’s been great this season, would definitely sign him

He's a master of the art of full back play.

For me, it's a toss up between him and Mads for POTY, with the latter just knicking it based turning things around.

If financially viable then yes. He is a good left back at this level. Has fitted in well.

I will be in the minority here but although I like him his injury history - serious hamstring and groin problems - and that he can't play '3 game weeks' means a no to signing him in the summer. We cannot keep bringing in injury prone players.

A no to three game weeks means he misses maybe 6 or 7 games a season. He's been played pretty much every other game. I like him and would be pleased if we signed him permanently. We need the right balance of youth and experience.

This argument only works if we assume RND will have permanent injury problems for the rest of his career which is clearly a stretch. If we binned off all our players who had previous injury issues we’d be left with about half a dozen. As well as JCS we’d be showing the likes of Chair, Poku and Kolli the door (all of which have been injured for extended periods).
He has also made 24 appearances so far this season which is the 8th highest in the whole squad so there’s hardly a major problem there.
He’s been consistently decent at both ends of the field with a good disciplinary record as well. Can’t see us getting a better player without paying big money and even then it’s a gamble: RND has shown us what he can do and it would be great to keep him.

I really like the guy. Thought he was excellent yesterday. He does have a bit of pace and he can defend. The article from WLS indicates that he had to be carefully managed for the first half of the season, and may play more regularly for the second half.

Always a risk taking on a player that has had a bad injury, but I would sign him based on his performances this season. SU fans tended to rate him highly before his injury.

I think what you say is an argument for not signing players with chronic injury histories, rather than signing them. Those players you mention...

JCS has been available for 4 games this season, Chair has been available for 11 (with no return in sight for either), Kolli 11 too, Poku 8.

JCS has made 11 appearances in total since signing a new "long-term contract" in September 2024. Eleven games in 16 months. A senior player on good money: is that VFM? Perhaps that would have been spent better elsewhere, on a more robust centre back, no matter how much we like JCS.

RND is a good player, good attitude, great for the team this year, but he has a long history of ankle injuries that needs to be managed and one catastrophic hamstring too. This is his most productive season in seven (at Barrow), but it's reminiscent of the one season JCS turned in to get that new contract before disappearing again.

There are other more robust left-backs out there. Not a single person on this board was advocating signing Rhys Norrington Davies before he joined. There will be another left back we've not heard of who can do the job as well.

Generally, we should be signing more robust players, especially defenders.

Surely all the tax relief incentives under CIRD80000+ makes him worth buying?

For me its a total no brainer. This whole debate is completely stark raving bonkers for me. And there are many on here that dont want RND !!!

Injury hit player who has only been involved in 24 games this season !! Games he hasnt played because he was rested, not injured. Bloody sick note - no hoper - lets bin him !!!!!

I cant understand the reluctance.of so many on here to allow him to leave. Not as if we have a great track record of signing consistent and actually this season available full backs and he will be relatively cheap also, and not old ie 26.

If we dont we have esquerdinha who is still very raw and Larkeche coming back from potentially career ending injury that he has had and as yet to prove he is anything other than a second in command choice at left back.

I say- this one if a lot get their way of letting him leave is one that could seriously bite us on the bum painfully...

But yes lets get rid limited bang average sick note !!!

Sometimes i am concerned posters have consumed copious amounts of hard drugs as this does not seem to be viewed from a sane perspective. Maybe, its just me though !!!

Well, exactly? There are other good players we've not heard of who may represent better value than a 27-year-old who's averaged 20-odd games a season over the last seven because he's not robust enough to play many more.

I reckon we may sign him and if we do I hope it's a big success. But I'd worry about it given his and our injury record.
