One of the great afternoon HQ after last weeks disappointment.

Great team performance.

Not sure who did not track the runner for the Coventry goal, but in fairness it was a quality ball into the box.

When you consider how many players we have out it really does hit home what a great result it was.

Some really good performances from the back four, Vale and Kone with a great goal, but my man of the match was Madsen today.

The ball in for Kone’s goal was quality and the calmness to his finish was outstanding.

Madsen has come on so much from last season and is a top performer week in week out this season.

Come on you R’s

Agree

I’ve never quite got it. Tradition dictates Kone beats em up and Burrell gets the bits off of him.
I get the press argument but Kone showed he can do that today

We’ll see

Since Kone went back to the very front of the attack he has looked like the player we saw at the start of the season.

His hold-up play and physical presence were superb today. He did everything right with that looping header too (it was right in front of us) and that save would not have been made by 8/10 keepers.

It seems like being the point of the attack works best for Burrell and Kone. Nice problem to have I suppose.

Same here. I’ve watched it a few times and it’s a straight knee to knee challenge in the box. A penalty all day long.

The first photo on Paul Smyth's post after the game certainly looks like a foul and the ref is looking straight at it.

I'm sure Field/Saito have given away penalties for similar challenges earlier this season.

Kone is showing what he can do when playing as a traditional no 9. Stephan must play Burrell as the second striker when he returns.

I think Burrell would be wasted on the bench. I agree Kone needs to be the traditional no. 9 but Burrell could move out wide.

Shout out to Ronnie too. Played like he never left. Impressive, since he's not played much all season. Pull down sky blues.

I watched in a bar in Texas… surprisingly they let me cast the game from my iPad to the TV. And it drew several people to watch, I think we’ve got a few new fans in Fort Worth now

Smyth was throwing himself to the ground all game and the ref had done his homework on him. It may have been a penalty but he was absolutely looking for it and there was a bit of boy who cried wolf about the decision.

Maybe, but anywhere else on the pitch he's giving that a foul and free kick.

I hope we can get RND on a perm. He seems to really enjoy being here and is doing a good job down that left side. I liked Paal, but RND is an upgrade imho.

Obviously I howled for the penalty, but I thought the ref was pretty good yesterday. Get the game moving and didn’t seem to be guessing like some.

By 'second striker' I don't necessarily mean Burrell should be on the bench but, when we're playing 442, he should be behind Kone instead of in front as he has been positioned before he got injured. That would enable Kone to be the focal and lead point of attack, which is where he plays best.

I'm not sure we should change his hairstyle mate, he's doing fine with it as it is.

Thought he had a poor first half. Can only assume someone had a word because he was much better after the break.

Handsome Ronnie had a serious perm going on yesterday. Must have forgot to bring his hair styling products with him.

I’m amazed that refs who know the Championship still give any free kicks when Smyth goes down.

It’s got to the point where he’s on his way down before the full back even gets there. As teams get bigger and stronger it’s noticeable that he struggles to get away from them now and dropping to the floor has become plan A to hang onto the ball. Strikes me he now plays as our most forward defender.

Gives his all and love him for that but where’s the end product?

Watched on a stream but it was very noticeable the difference in body language from last week on terms of seeing the game out…very aggressive, lots of “you ain’t fcuking doing that again”, possibly both a positive reaction from last week and the 7-1

Spot on . Watch the reaction from Kone and the players after the equaliser. No huge celebrations, no histrionics. They just got on with it and wanted that winner .
Brilliant attitude and will to win , despite the vaunted reputation of the leauge leaders .
Love it .

I thought Smythy had a really good game yesterday. A pesky little mite who annoyed and kept coming back to annoy more. Yes, he does go down too easily sometimes but he also gets us free kicks in good positions too. That will keep defenders very wary. I wasn’t sure about the penalty - seen them given though for sure; I’d have been shouting for it.

Thought the ref was barely OK. How Cov didn’t get some yellows I don’t know - especially after the Kone booking. There were two or three similarly rated transgressions that would have warranted yellows for me. That mugging of Smyth in the corner!?

I never get how a player can be physically shoved in the back and it’s not a free kick - saw them do it a few times yesterday, us also, how can it not be a foul to shove a player hard in the back so he loses the ball or control?? It was nice to see less of the manhandling bullshit that goes on at corners.

Enjoyable game. Great result. Let’s follow it up with a strong winning run now. And we’ve got some of our better rated players yet to come back FFS! Gonna have to work to get your places back lads.

Smyth signed a new contract a month ago so we have him for the foreseeable. And, with Dembele now out for a while, he's very likely to continue to start until Chair and/or Poku return. Then I think we'll see him play off the bench, which is where he's best used, and that includes his ability to get free kicks, legitimate or not.

Harsh I think. He won the free kick getting himself in between the ball and defender outside the corner of the box and was reffed to a different standard to the other players after that. Can accept the penalty not being given if the ref judges it as Smyth moving his leg into the defender to make the contact (not sure that was the case but in the moment it looked plausible) but the one at the end of the first half near the corner flag was pathetic refereeing.

Coventry Reflection on 09:52 - Feb 1 with 107 viewsnadera78

There was a moment in the first half where Walsh played it long to Smyth on the break and he challenged for the header, then sprinted on to challenge for the loose ball and win us a throw deep in their half. That's why he's effective, because he challenges defenders, he chases things down, he puts people under pressure - he also works bloody hard getting up and down the flank to protect his full back btw. Not forgetting the odd goal and assist. You need players like Smyth in your team, that's why he's popular with his teammates and every coach we've had.

Not only was that an absolute stonewall penalty, but the ref let them get away with a few fouls on him. Including the multiple fouls in one down by the corner flag. Then the one where the guy had him in a headlock and Smyth lashed out.

As for Coventry, I haven't seen enough of them to judge but going on yesterday's performance if all they have are long throws and fouls then I hope they blow it.

My view from the LL is never optimal but I wouldn’t have called it a 4-4-1-1. Obviously it’s all positive vibes and rightly so after this horrendous run but I thought Hayden was poor and that could be the better fit as a position for Edwards, who didn’t have a bad game at right-back by any means.

I thought Hayden was great, personally, and only a shade behind Kone and Madsen as MoM. He's also the much better option in CM to be paired with Madsen, and I would be having him over Varane as a first choice. Varane has good traits but dallies too much in possession and doesn't focus exclusively on the basics in the way Hayden does.

Also agree with the posters here, a real nourishing performance and win that you need occasionally to remind you why you bother! Even more acute after last weeks gut / bollock / back to the gut again punch. The switch to an extra midfielder over a 442 has really helped with performances, and brought the best out of Kone and Madsen especially - so credit where it's due.

One *small* ongoing criticism is once again the subs. I know the Dembele forced withdrawal gave us less options, but we once again only used 3/5 subs and Field for Hayden was also due to him going down. He seems slow to make them and changes are limited and often like for like... Especially odd given the conditioning of the players.

Anyway, a 9/10 day so let's roll into Charlton and win that please

At one point 2 subs were stripped and ready for a double substitution, then we scored so it didn’t happen.

Trouble is Burrell is not a second striker, as he plays on the shoulder as a 9, utilizing his biggest asset - his pace to get in behind as a goal threat and down the channels to stretch teams. Putting him in a withdrawn 10 role, you lose that danger, which is why Stefan has not been doing that.
