| Ashes thread on 09:59 - Nov 22 by ed_83 | Saddened but not particularly surprised to wake up and see it all done and dusted. Absolutely braindead stuff from England sadly. I completely get that Bazball is about freeing players to be positive, and overall I still think it’s a good thing, but there are situations where it surely needs tempering a bit, in favour of some balance and restraint. However talented our batters are, it feels like the mentality to dig in and slowly grind out a total when required isn’t there. We just constantly default to slogging, which either goes brilliantly or falls apart. Huge missed opportunity here, feels like the match and possibly the entire series have just been thrown away. |
I don't think this bazball approach to be positive is why we lost, Aussies won it playing that way in the 2nd innings, we just had some key players in Brook, Root and Stoke get out playing poor shots. Smith was very unlucky to get out Lets be honest 205 lead look more than competitive on that pitch but Head went out and was positive and smashed it all over the place. Series is far from over but England will have to bat a lot better to stand any chance

Also BazBall is at its best when we bowl first. I am stunned we chose to bat, to be honest. I thought the whole point is that we scare the opposition because we can smash our way to anything in the final innings? Bit like what the Aussies did to us really. We are going to be rubbish at defending without quality spin.

Must have a big golf tournament lined up.

Totally agree. But the Aussies discovered you just need to hang the ball around the off stump and we'll get ourselves out. Doesn't bode well.

You can't honestly believe any team captained by Ben Stokes would either be picked on golf abilities or not prepare hard enough? Listen to an interview with Mark Wood in the summer. He hates golf, and just laughs at the perception the has beens put out about it. [Post edited 22 Nov 10:59]

It does have that feeling, only two teams I really care about is rangers and the England cricket team, hate it when they both lose on the same day.

Starc at left back or in goal and Head up front I reckon.

205 seemed like a competitive total, but I think that wicket really flattened out, as a lot of people predicted it would. Didn't seem to be much in it for the bowlers as it went on. Had we (Pope, Brook, Root in particular) batted for time and not got out to cheap wafty drives outside off-stump, we could have put up a proper total. I quite like Bazball, but there's a time and a place to just bed in for a bit - that they still can't see that is bonkers.

Yes, that does seem bizarre. I get why he's so bullish in trusting in the philosophy though as up to the last few hours they were on top. Win and the English media are purring. It shows the fine margins in top level sport.
| Ashes thread on 13:31 - Nov 22 with 1766 views | Match82 | Being 6 hours behind you not, I went to bed when we had a 99 run lead at lunch. Woke up half awake musing on the score before I checked it. Would it be 300-7, something we'd feel good about defending? 250 all our which would feel more in line with expectations, but maybe a couple of Australian wickets down already? Never even crossed my mind that I'd check and see the game was already over and that we'd lost it, that was some collapse. Difficult to come back from this | | | |
| Ashes thread on 13:41 - Nov 22 with 1748 views | Pindarus | Entirely predictable after all the bazball hype. 100 runs ahead with 1 wicket down and allegedly the fastest attack ever. We needed people who could consolidate. Too much 20/20 cricket means we don't know how to play test cricket. No proper warm up matches, pitching in bowlers who have barely played for a year. And Cummins and Hazelwood to return. And please please can we dispense with Crawley. A test batsman who is worth his salt should have a batting average of over 45. | | | |

| Ashes thread on 20:10 - Nov 22 with 1414 views | Superhoops2808 | I'm just gutted we managed to screw that up in a way only England can My night/day (as was sleeping most of the day) consisted of watch Hamilton and Ferrari balls up quali at Vegas in the F1, then England self destruct and then I thought here comes the third when Rangers went 0-1 down. At least they perked me up For me, the only people in the team that can have any resemblance of credibility is the bowlers in that first innings. Masterstroke by the Aussies to put Head out to open and take the game away from us. Every single England batsman (and not just Crawley) should hold their head in shame and that includes the coach. I agree its time to be sensible and bat for 100 0vers and get a decent score on the board. 2 weeks to get their head back in the game | | | |
| Ashes thread on 20:29 - Nov 22 with 1347 views | Kiwi76 | Really poor, biggest opportunity of the series, Aussie minus 2 world class bowlers and a new opener and all done in 2 days. Not good enough in test cricket to score at 5+ an over but only bat 30-40 overs. Aussie will always find an innings from someone - don’t like him but great knock under pressure from Head. Hope can be a competitive series but not holding my breath. Let’s see how mental coaching guru Gilbert Enoka works his magic before 2nd test… | | | |
| Ashes thread on 20:32 - Nov 22 with 1335 views | numptydumpty | Totally out Bazballed !!!! However was concerned by McCullums interview afterwards, where he basically said we will always play on the front foot. There are times, i feel, in a test match, where sometimes some semblance of sensibility has to take place. Bazball works in the right moments, but there are times in test matches when you need to adapt to good old fashioned grinding out the scores and thats fine too. Basically in our second innings, at 100 for 1 and the likelihood we get 250 ahead mimimum and we are very competitive. Surely 100 for 1 effectively in a one innings match and three and a half days left to play, dont all play like its a t20 knockout. After two quick wickets, dont continue. Take your time and play the situation. Root, Brook, Stokes, Smith, Duckett and Pope all can play long. It is still a test match and its about adapting your game to the match situation. 100 for 1 and every player trying to score at ten an over is an idiotic way to play and we got what we deserved. This is the Stokes and McCullum plan and the players are playing according to what they are told, but its a way to lose five zero, if they constantly continue to play tests in this idiotic way. Sometimes read the game situation !!!! Not impressed. Threw away a great opportunity and they are going to continue thus Test matches arent t20 games Ben and Brendan !!!!!!!!. | Ashes thread on 20:46 - Nov 22 with 1285 views | Rsole | Report from Stephan Shemilt: ‘Where do England go from here? They have been beaten so swiftly in Perth they have time to fly home, have a week off, then fly back to Brisbane for a round of golf and the second Test. Australia bowled out England twice in 67.3 overs in Perth. Not since 1904 have England survived so few deliveries in losing a Test.’ https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/articles/cy7v6zy5ev7o | |

I think that was largely inevitable but I’d be seriously fecked off as a tourist paying money to see the last day of cricket unfold, then knowing what’s coming next and doing FA about it. My kids saw me in the crowd at the SCG on TV many years ago, when we just gave up and still remind me of how pissed off I looked then. I wouldn’t go back for cricket reasons again, as much as I enjoy OZ and NZ.
