| Possession stat 11:37 - Feb 1 with 1451 views | loftboy | Biggest load of fake news bollocks ever dreamt up, we had 62% less possession but had far more shots on goal, surely that’s all that’s important, you aren’t going to score tippy tapping with the ball across the back line. | |

| Possession stat on 11:46 - Feb 1 with 1368 views | T_Block | Yes strange in that it didn’t feel like they had so much more possession.Almost 50-50, actually the comments around me was how good our defensive shape was.For the people who are keen on these things .The first rule is to stop a ‘vertical ‘ pass up the pitch .Apparently we did that well.Yes they got through the first/second line a few times-but basically didn’t really have a clear cut chance from open play. Their goal came from ,I would suggest, analysis of Edwards. They overloaded the back post 2v1 ,Edwards can only mark one .Their goal came other arrived late.Classic second half instruction.,getting an early goal. | | | |

Given the amount of passing round the back that Coventry were doing then this distorts the possession facts. I like it under Stephan that we look to get the ball forward much earlier than under Marti. Might lose possession more often but usually that’s to the opposition back four who the pan just pass it around for a few minutes

| Possession stat on 12:07 - Feb 1 with 1256 views | Wilkinswatercarrier | Coventry were just pish balling around on the halfway line or 10 yards either side of it. They can have the ball all day long there. | |

It's the passing along their backline that skews the stats so much. Possession isn't dictated by how long you have the ball, it's done on successful passes completed, so them passing along their defence 10 times before losing it vs us knocking it up to Kone early will always have the same possession stats. Ultimately it's a nonsense stat and I'd rather play direct, although I do think not having the ball for the majority of the game does have an effect on our conditioning towards the end of matches. Watch Kone and Vale yesterday shuffling left to right and back again every time Coventry had the ball - no surprise they were the ones that looked most gassed by the end.

That’s why there should be more players involved in the press, although that potentially leaves the door open for balls through the channels or over the top. We do have a tendency to sit deep and go to press the defenders just inside their own half of the pitch, which suits us and maintains our defensive shape and structure.

I agree on their goal, it was very cleverly worked by them. Bennie has got a lot of blame for it, including at the time from Edwards, but it was more complicated than just missing the extra wide man on an overload. Edwards followed a striker in from the outside, but Eccles actually then peeled away from the centre to a wide position to meet the cross. Bennie had tracked him but maybe thought he could hand him off to Dunne or Cook. Lessons learned, hopefully.
| Possession stat on 13:10 - Feb 1 with 981 views | derbyhoop | If we stay in shape, which we have done for some time, the opposition can have plenty of possession in their own half. 20 passes along the back 4 before trying to move forward can boost possession but is meaningless. The 3 important stats from yesterday were:- 1. 15 shots on goal vs their 9 2. 8 on target vs 2 3. 2 goals scored vs 1 | |

| Possession stat on 13:17 - Feb 1 with 948 views | kensalriser | Yes, 62% less possession is fake news - our possession of 37% is 59% of Coventry's possession of 62%, which is 41% less. Other than that, possession stats are probably true and accurate but their relationship to final results may vary. But don't we all know that already? | |

| Possession stat on 13:20 - Feb 1 with 937 views | stevec | Yeah, possession stats in the oppositions half would be worthwhile, overall possession can be rendered meaningless if it’s all in your own half. Been mentioned earlier here that 3 of the top 4 have good overall possession stats, so it’s not all baloney. In the end Coventry will go up because of this, they may have struggled against us but the way they moved the ball would beat most sides. Think we have a sort of hot potato possession but there are signs occasionally that we can break that mould. | | | |

This. Whilst it's great winning with low percentage, to be challenging at the top you need to control games. We don't really do it yet, though when Chair is back I expect our possession to go up.

| Possession stat on 14:16 - Feb 1 with 724 views | Hoopstar | What I enjoyed most about our shape and structure was how often they were reduced to aimless longish balls that bounced through to Walsh with no Cov player remotely near it. | | | |

Control isn't all about possession of the ball. In the Loftus IQ article that Clive referenced in his match preview, there is a section on Game Control which I found to be an interesting read. It suggest that you can still be controlling parts of the game even when the opposition have possession of the ball. https://qpranalytics.substack. The part of Game Control is about halfway down the article.

Yes possession in the opponents half would be a much more meaningful metric. Opta's top six for possession are currently:- Middlesbrough 57.8% Southampton 57.3% Ipswich 56.4% Swansea 55.1% Coventry 54.7% Stoke 53.6% Three of those teams are below us in the table. The next four on possession - Birmingham, Leicester, Norwich and West Brom are also all below us. Maybe possession, which was regarded as a plus because it was said it made the defending side work harder and of course you need the ball to attack, has now been countered? Wrexham, Millwall, Preston, Hull and Derby are all in the bottom third of Opta's possession table and in the top third of the league table. So maybe it is baloney.
| Possession stat on 14:44 - Feb 1 with 611 views | Juzzie | Coventryola. All that possession but two shots on target. First in the 53rd minute and the second in injury time which by all accounts didn’t trouble Walsh at all but still counted as on target. Yet we had, with 37% possession, 8 on target yield 2 goals and 6 goalkeeper saves so we’re far more effective on the ball. | | | |
| Possession stat on 18:07 - Feb 1 with 334 views | Match82 | Depends how you use it I think. If you're saying "we had the most possession we deserved to win" then that's idiotic. But it's a fairly harmless and high level way of saying that the other team had most of the ball. And that's fine. Now you start combining it with shots on goal as you say and you can start to create the story - we had all the ball but weren't able to do anything with it, should still be considered a "bad" outcome, which is what you're correctly suggesting. | | | |

Thanks for posting the link, very interesting. The table showing the overall control almost mirrors the current league table. The only outliers are Sheff Utd and Hull. We are going in the right direction, but still need to keep the ball better if we are to challenge for promotion.

| Possession stat on 21:54 - Feb 1 with 71 views | stainrods_elbow | Can possession officially do one after yesterday's showing? We're not very good at keeping the ball, clearly, but finally to show some incisiveness in the final third truly warms the cockles. | |
