This Championship is still very Championship.

I was subjected to watching Ipswich once again last night & they reverted to their normal Championship performance. The three matches they have won easily this season is due more to Sheffield United, Norwich & Queens Park Rangers standing off them & allowing them to dominate. Hirst won hardly anything, plus they played Akpom instead of Nunez!

So I am sitting in out patients in a Galway hospital and the guy across from me is a dead ringer for Marti. Couldn't take a pic in case I was arrested for breach of something. Anyway he got called by the nurse and he is 'Fabio'. Must be Marti's long lost twin or else Marti is using an alias If nothing else it livened up a rather boring hospital visit

The implication is that xG is a load of bollix. As many of us have thought for a while.

As I understand it, it doesn't factor in the quality of the person having the shot or the quality of the goalkeeper, so Zico taking a free kick against Nardi in the same position as Gus Caesar taking a free kick against Gordon Banks has the same rating.

What about Yoanne Barbet sizing one up from 25 yards and Tony Roberts in goal across the channel near Dieppe? I'd have a lot more confidence in that scenario.

It is. It’s bollocks and the media, and therefore most fans, misunderstand it. xG in a game is utterly irrelevant. All shots, unless you have an open goal 2 yards out have a low xG, but that doesn’t mean players can’t, don’t, and shouldn’t score such chances. So it doesn’t have any ability to determine whether someone slotting one in from 18 yards was justified in the context of the game, or robbery. It only has value across a whole season where it is a reasonable indicator of league position, although not sure it’s any better than GD. So the media and fans should only be interested in YTD xG. Yet no one anywhere publishes this regularly, but xG per game has become a key match stat, which is nonsense. As is “key passes”, which has to be the most subjective “stat” imaginable. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That’ll be a slog playing away on the Wednesday up norf then down to Norwich anyway. Norwich have Oxford at home on the Tuesday for, assuming they have a new manager, his first home game which you’d fancy will be a win. Perhaps a chance for our hardworking heroes to have some time together and a relaxing spa break somewhere on the route from Blackburn to East Anglia rather than bother heading all the way home late Wednesday and then eastward on Friday.

Now I think I am finally going all 'proper football man' about something....but what do the likes of Dave Challinor and Richie Wellens lack that these guys have? Genuine question, there is probably a good answer which is why someone like Matos is in consideration, or that random Catalan bloke who managed 3 wins in 19 games at Stoke last season.
