The Poku debate 18:20 - Mar 10 with 3941 viewsHooping_Mad

So I saw the fall guy telling the journo's in the after match that our Poku (Deemed fit) didn't feel up to doing 15/20 minutes for us on Sunday.

Not good is it. He basically telling us all Poku couldn't be bothered.

Didn't fancy it. Which begs the question are there others? Saito? I mean he pulls on the shirt but that's about it lately.

So while most, including me think the CEO/DOF should be taking the blame I can't escape the feeling JS has lost the dressing room and it's only going to get worse from here.

I do hope I'm wrong.

Poku's had three hamstring injuries in what was meant to be a big season for him.
If he's saying he's not ready I'd be inclined to believe that, as opposed to him not wanting to play. He knows if he does it again that's going to eat into pre-season and next season now.

Yes I agree 3 hamstrings seems a lot. For a breakout season.

The post was more concerned with the nature of his comments, I think it was raised by one of the podcasts this week, rather wondering if we think its a sign of good man management?

Whatever the state of his hamstrings this week, I'm not pinning my hopes on this one.

Yeh I raised my eyebrows at the comment as well.

Like this time last year with Cifuentes, Stephan is starting to send up a few smoke signals in the non-club press conferences and interviews IMO.

For a player that's appeared 9 times as well.

I wonder if CN will offering the peace pipe this week, have a feeling it would be in his interest.

Knowing CN he'd probably just stab him in the back at the end of the season.

Poku was always a risk. He had a horrendous hamstring injury at Peterborough and a history of injuries. But, when he did actually play he was electric. A player that good without the injuries would have been many more millions. He's had a disastrous first season injuries wise and you do wonder if after this many hamstring injuries if he really can get going? However, if he can he actually gets a few games under his belt then we know he could be a very useful player.

I feel for him. I just hope he makes it.

Repeating myself but……. The lad won’t make more than 50 full appearances across his Contract.

As stated above, a shame as he “looks” a player.
The club has to stop burning money buying duds, crocks and flawed players - it’s a false economy that has the most minimal of success rates. This happens when you have novices going up against shrewd experienced football operators and this transfer epitomises that.

Another JCS by the sounds of it. Not sure this strategy of buying injury prone players is working.

Well it obviously is because we seem to have bought all of them.

I think Sam Field had a pretty poor injury record at West Brom for what its worth.

I agree though, more due diligence must be done. The only successful rehab I've seen this season is for RND (a Sheff Utd players!) who we have managed the fitness of, avoiding three game weeks etc to put in a season with more apps than hes had in a while.

I'm sure his parent club will be happy with that, as it pushes up any money they might get for him. Hopefully not from QPR this time!

Sam Field and also Charlie Austin - so we've had a couple of big successes with this strategy. However, it seems those have served to embolden the Club and now we seem to be going overboard to target crocks.

On a note about Poku though, I'm sure all our pre-season reports on him highlighted how many games he's played at a young age and how injury resistant he appeared to be

Yeh, played about 200 games by the time he was 22, I liked the signing for that reason.
I don’t know, I’ve given the club a kicking recently but I still think that was worth a go.
Treatment, recovery and management of the situation since though, big questions.

Apparently, Poku in the squad tonight. Why am I fearful that he will have a 20-minute cameo and pull up again

Totally agreed. The first injury coming what felt like 5 minutes into his first match was unfortunate - how his recovery has been handled by the Club since is more questionable

Good shout with Charlie, we could only get him the first time around because he had failed a medical.

I'm not sure he was ever fully fit, his shoulder strapping was immense, I think it used to dislocate all the time?

To get the best out of Poku we’d have to change how we set up . Poku is an out and out wide man .
Pointless playing him inside like Saito and Vale did Sunday upon his return . Of which I can see neither a return or any sort of change in tactics happening any time soon.

Let’s hope I’m wrong on both accounts this evening .

Yes, isn't that the issue? Very different patching up a cyclist to a professional footballer.

The injury record of the 1st team squad under the guidance/management of Williams is indeed very questionable.

If we don't include the women's, development and youth squad's in the availability stats for the season I would estimate it at around 65 -70%. It seems that there is always 5 or more players unavailable

Currently Chair, Burrell, Madsen, Obikwu, Dembele and Larkeche are all injured. Poku is only now available. That is 7 players from the squad of 22.

Walsh, Hamer, Nardi,
Dunne, Mbengue, Edwards, Cook, Norrington-Davies, Adamson, Larkeche
Hayden, Varane, Morgan, Saito, Smyth, Vale, Poku, Madsen, Chair,
Kone, Kollii, Burrell, Obikwu

We can include Field and Morrison as part of the 1st team squad. I haven't included Esquerdinha as he is meant to be a Development Squad player who has played a few games as cover.

This can also be a problem - when discussing this previously I sighted the high profile case of Michael Owen who was pushed too hard too young and his hammys were an issue thereafter.

I'm wise after the event on Poku admittedly but football isn't my business.
I've said on here before that when we were linked a fella I worked with who lives up that way and has Posh connections told me Darragh was having us over and delighted to be getting £900k as the lad would have ongoing injury issues after a huge spell out for them.

Like I say.... I am just a mug punter but.....if someone says to me "here is player X, was absolutey electric, looked to be going places, career held up due to a hamstring injury last year when he was out for six months"; then I'm getting VERY strong Chris Willock vibes to be honest.

But then what do I know?

Maybe it's just me, but I've seen all of his very few appearances this season, admitteditly on the tv, and I'm still wondering what's the deal. I've seen nothing tbh.

Technology advances, unfortunately humans do not.

Looked decent when he came on.. although Smyth was looking our best player prior so was a shame they took him off. But Poku's appearance seemed like a positive from the game, if nothing else.

Who's this Harrison Burrows that played for us today, Brum comms spent 90 mins calling Ronnie Edwards Harrison Burrows, which was really annoying.
