I was pro allowing alcohol to be drunk in sight of the pitch until reading this forum. As always LFW is the voice of reason, too many knobs will be lobbing beer if their team scores which I hadn't thought about.
I would say that they don't have a problem anywhere else in the world when it comes to drinking beer in the stands but British blokes are a bit.........different. |
Agree with you on this mate. I'd be completely for allowing beers in the stands but I completely forgot that people in the UK can't seemingly celebrate a goal without throwing their beer in the air. It would absolutely f**k me off if it happened to me.
Really annoying because watching in other countries it never happens. I've always got a beer in hand when watching Lausanne-Sport as do many others and yet no cups get thrown in the air when the team (rarely, this season!) scores.
Maybe they could allow it in English stadiums but bring in a law stipulating that anyone who throws their beer in the air is to receive a punch to the nose/throat from anyone within 5 seats of them. |  |

Whatever your political persuasion, it surely can be agreed that he faces a mountain of problems to address, and this surely shouldn’t even be a spec on the horizon. Stop with the populist policies and get on tackling the big problems.
First step, give the bond market some indication you’re going to reduce government spending to get a softening in the gilts’ interest rate to reduce borrowing costs and give you further headroom to actually do/fix stuff. |

Not for me either, not just people throwing beers to celebrate a goal but sloshing it over you as they return to their seat with full pints, beers getting knocked over leaving a sticky mess and having to get up all the time for people going to buy a pint.

Pre-season at Bromley, lovely sunny evening, balcony bar runs the whole length of the side stand, nice beer watching the warm ups. 2 minutes before a pre-season friendly starts they bring mechanical shutters down so you can't see the pitch and you're now standing in a dark tube.

Agree with the last line to an extent. But the problem is you have to do stuff people will notice. Gradually improving trains over 20 years: no one will remember who did that (no one really remembers that it was Ken who completely changed the underground and made it work again. People think it's bad now (and it isn't, not really): yeah, try it in the late 90s lads).
Starmer's work on small boats has gone completely unnoticed and totally ignored: numbers are way, way down thanks to his policies and work. But you'd never know it because he was 'boring' and Farage has to find the one thing that will distract people from all his financial shenanigans.
I'm afraid Burnham is absolutely right to find some happy quick wins (although I';m in agreement with you totally: context on when it's allowed is everything - I'm not sure there's even room to bend my arm to drink a beer in the SA Stand) that this country of dullards might actually notice, while he tries to tackle stuff that can't be fixed in a few weeks by deploying the armed forces or whatever it is people think will work. |  |

It is discriminatory as you can drink while watching other sports, e.g. Rugby, Cricket. However, apart from the drunkeness and associated yob behaviour, getting drenched in beer is a good enough reason to keep the status quo. |

In principle this is correct. However, as a matter of fact the people watching the cricket and rugby generally don't contain the complete drunken, geared up knobheads looking for trouble that you get at the football.
It's an awful idea, and I have no doubt within a year or two it would be reversed after serial trouble at matches.
On a related note AB is a pr*ck (IMHO) who has a massive job on his hands which he is incapable of doing (so he's just playing populist, diversionary politics). He'll no doubt increase welfare spending again in October and increase the debt pile even further, but that's alright because you can have a beer at the football  [Post edited 24 Sep 13:13]

Test cricket is the best sport in the world. Far more 'interesting' than football (but yes crowds would undoubtedly be down if no booze. That says more about the UK's social habits and booze problems than it does about the sport though) [Post edited 24 Sep 13:15]

But baby steps at Loftus Road. Perhaps QPR could start by opening the bars throughout the match, as they do at - checks notes - Millwall and St Andrews, to name two. It would also solve a daft situation downstairs where people who've hired executive boxes can't drink while the game is taking place (unless this has changed). Haven't had the experience too often myself but last time I was down there everybody was sitting drinking beer out of coffee cups. | | | |

I think the FSA have been lobbying for it for a while so he responded to a question about it whilst in New York, guessing it was about how fans could drink at the World Cup but not in England. There is no suggestion he's actually going to do push for this to happen, he was just answering a question and it's a slow news week.
I get the idea that it should be down to the clubs if they serve it or not rather than banned. Too many idiots at football in England to make it work though.
