The wee lad appears to have gone up a level or two.
West Ham defence were having massive problems with him and last night he stood out. What was the criticism of him previously-no end product?
Very very important when Burrell is missing .

And he is right about the fouls he is not given.Part of the game Refs are like that
Please stay fit .

Rather than looking for a foul he’s now concentrating on running at teams and getting properly fouled. Gets kicked all over the place anyway, might as well it happens in the penalty box now rather than the half way line.

Bit of a Micky Leach in some ways. Any faults become exaggerated in a poor side, in a good side you see his qualities.

I think he's always had it in his game but it hasn't been brought to the fore. He needs to be allowed to pick the ball up and run - even if he does lose it now again or shank the final product. We need to play to his strengths - hasn't always happened

Indeed. Three across the middle does change the widemen thought process, it means they can concentrate on attacking whilst the defensive side, still needed, but not to the detriment of their forward play.

Madsen/Kamara+one other transforms this team.

I occassionally post this in match threads.

Never write off Paul Smyth!

I think he's in his prime. 29 now (how is Smythy 29) and absoutely flying and buzzing about. He's a pest to play against, long may his rich vein of form continue.

From the halfway line!

He's never played so well and been so influential imo...it's a joy to see

Never ever understood the stick Wee man gets from a certain section of our fanbase! Ive liked him from day one , works hard , trys hard , leaves it all out on the pitch and scores some wonderful goals. He bleeds blue and white as they say! Im glad others are feeling about him as ive always done.

AND WHEN I DREAM , I DREAM ABOUT YOU AND WHEN I SCREAM I SCREAM ABOUT YOU!!!!!

Always one of the first names on the team sheet for me.

Spot on Stephen!

I'd merely add that he also seems to have cut out those petulant fouls he frequently gave away and he's currently among the first names in the Starting XI.

The Wee Man is having a stormer and I imagine the oppo full backs dread playing against him as much as our full backs enjoy having him in front of them.

Absolutely this, this type of player is worth his weight in gold.

He's been brilliant this season - not just going forwards, but also his defeinsive work.

It's so good to see a winger run at their full back at pace - and his end product has been good to add to it. So pleased for him, he works so hard.

His crossing as really improved... that cross for the Kolli chance of the line was gorgeous

I liked Smyth from the moment he scored in that Cardiff game... the lad is pure joy to watch...

I said last season that we could do with having 11 Paul Smyths in our team for the amount of effort and commitment he puts into every game.
It seems like we are closer to that idea now than we have been for a while because the work ethic and team spirit being shown by all the players this season has been brilliant.

Definitely an early contender for POTS so far.

Add me to this list.

He’s been terrific this season.

He's picked up his game over the last year. He's gone from willing but limited trier to influential player. He's never going to be the greatest crosser, but his running directly at limited defenders causes all sorts of problems.

Never underestimate what his pace brings to the team. He must be a nightmare to defend against once he gets into his stride. And he does the defensive side as well.
As well as Kemper played, Smyth was my MOM last night.

100% this. Made an impression on me that game too. The flick on by big Matt Smith on the halfway line, Smythy sprinting away from the Cardiff defender to smash it in. (Wasn't that his debut?)

I really liked his appearances after that, but some fans didn't rate him. He then spent a period of time out on loan before being sold to Orient. I was gutted when he left, but delighted when he retuirned, despite a few fans being a bit "meh" about him returning from a spell in League 2, where they thought that was his level.

He's been great since he came back, and seems to be getting better and better!

Keep it up wee man!

He looks better on the right hand side too - more natural and I also think a lot of credit once again must go to JS who has got him playing to a higher level.

Some posters, including some on this very thread have criticised his crossing but I think it has much improved too

The amount of stick he gets from some corners is absolutely baffling to me. He's exactly the mind of player that we should love as fans - hard working, gives everything for the badge and is clearly a good influence in the dressing room. Oh, and he's also a really good player who pops up with goals (including again yesterday, and don't get me started on Preston). Legend. I hope he sees out his career with the club.

He’s even better since the International break - point to prove perhaps?

When he first came I liked his rawness and never say die attitude. Thought it was a mistake to sell/let him leave for Orient and when we resigned him it felt a bit of a desperation signing by Ainsworth as the purse was empty with FFP. But under first Marti and very much under JS he really is now starting to excel and given the competition he has for his place this seems to have been put him on a different level. He is more than competent with both feet, that left footed cross when cutting back which nearly resulted in Kolli scoring was superb, right in the area or utmost danger. His driving runs cause defenders major problems and has got us two penalties in the last two games (do they count as assists?). Was reading the Wham message board on Friday night and quite a few posters mentioned him and that they would love to have him or someone like him in their side. And now that he is adding goals on a regular basis he is a player that I’m more than happy to see starting matches for us. And on top of all of this he comes across as a really likeable guy.

Another member of the Smythy fan club here.

Hands down our most effective attacking player this season.

At the risk of sounding like bosh67, he's become Jamie Mackie Mk II.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

I reckon at this point it is literally just three or four kids on Twitter that have a weird thing about him. It's just they're very prolific and the algorithm is primed to send you nonsense that will wind you up.

Also, I'm amazed that fans are amazed that other fans think differently to them.

That has always happened and always will. Try and get five fans in a pub to agree on anything. I mean *anything*. Day of the week-type stuff.
